Updated PS6 Handheld Specs Leaked By KeplerL2: 24GB RAM, RDNA 5 GPU, PSSR 3.0

Hardware insider KeplerL2 revealed updated specifications for Sony’s rumored PS6 handheld, codenamed Project Canis, featuring six AMD CPU cores, 24GB of LPDDR5X memory, and support for PSSR 3.0 upscaling. The portable device is projected to launch alongside next-generation hardware between late 2027 and early 2028.

The hardware specifications for Sony’s long-rumored portable gaming companion have come into sharper focus following a fresh leak from noted industry insider KeplerL2, known for pinpointing PS5 Pro specs with an excellent level of accuracy. Published via Reddit and detailed by Digital Foundry, the updated blueprint for Project Canis offers a comprehensive look at what Sony intends to pack into a mobile form factor when it eventually arrives alongside the next-generation home console.

Project Canis Specifications: AMD Cores and Memory Bus Upgrades

The updated hardware configuration centres on a custom 6x AMD CPU core setup split between 4x Zen 6c cores and 2x Zen 6 LP cores. Graphics duties are handled by 16x RDNA 5 (UDNA) graphics compute units, paired with 24GB of LPDDR5X memory running on a 192-bit bus.

That memory architecture shift represents a notable change from earlier design iterations, where the memory bus appeared to have shifted from 128-bit to 192-bit. Moving to this wider interface allows the high-speed LPDDR5X to deliver more memory bandwidth, which acts as a key constraint for unlocking higher frame-rates in many gaming handhelds tested so far.

Operating parameters for the handheld call for a thermal design power range spanning from 15 to 25W. Clock speeds are tailored to power states, running at a 1.2GHz handheld mode clock speed, with docked mode operating at 1.65GHz.

PSSR 3.0 Upscaling and Local Library Compatibility

Performance on the go will rely heavily on advanced algorithmic enhancement. The hardware is meant to support a next-gen version of PSSR upscaling, PSSR 3.0, which includes frame generation.

When it comes to software compatibility, the handheld will be capable of playing PS4 and PS5 games locally, with support for next-gen games not necessarily guaranteed. Back in August 2025, fellow hardware tipster Moore’s Law Is Dead provided details on the PS6 portable companion, claiming it would support backwards compatibility with PS4 and PS5 generations, a MicroSD slot, M.2 SSD slot, Haptic Vibration, Dual Mics and a Touchscreen.

Pricing Realities and the Component Cost Debate

Industry observers face steep fiscal realities when calculating what such a device might cost consumers. KeplerL2 suggested earlier this year that a price under $600 would be an impossibility, and recently stated in a post on NeoGAF that $600 is definitely not possible right now as far as the price is concerned for the handheld, noting the increased price of LPDDR memory.

The wider hardware ecosystem also faces strategic hurdles. Ex-PlayStation boss Shawn Layden also recently touched on the rumoured PS6 handheld device, noting that the format holder has traditionally struggled when it comes to juggling two pieces of hardware.

Development Timeline and the Road to Project Amethyst

The portable companion project forms part of a broader technological alignment between Sony and AMD. As previously announced, Sony and AMD have teamed up for Project Amethyst, which is set to define the technology in the PS6.

Hardware tracking places the projected rollout window for Project Canis, which Sony is reportedly looking to release alongside its next-generation console whenever it finally sees the light of day, in fall 2027 through early 2028 alongside the PS6. While Sony has yet to officially acknowledge or date the handheld device, the leaking of granular architectural details indicates that the internal hardware specifications are steadily crystallizing.
