Following a fatal Miami jet crash, the widow of a passenger has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Amazon and aviation partners. Meanwhile, a former assistant athletic trainer has sued the Sacramento Kings over pregnancy discrimination, detailing months of workplace disputes and her eventual termination in mid-2025.
Lawsuit Alleges Botched Landing and Safety Failures in Fatal Amazon Jet Crash
The complaint, filed by Yaraisi Santiso Morejon, centers on the death of her husband, Yoel Rodriguez Naranjo. He was among five people killed when a Boeing 767 overran a runway at Miami International Airport and struck two vehicles.
According to the court filing, the flight operated under hazardous conditions that included an active thunderstorm in the area. Morejon’s complaint states plainly: This disaster was not an unavoidable accident,
laying blame on the flight crew for executing landing maneuvers that missed safe operating parameters.
The lawsuit identifies the pilots as Captain Joseph Carroll, 55, and co-pilot Jaime Felipe Silva Molina, 37. The complaint alleges the aircraft touched down more than 40 knots, or 46 mph, faster than recommended speeds, landed 4,000 feet past the target touchdown zone, and failed to execute a proper nose-flare maneuver to slow its descent rate. When the approach became unstable, the crew allegedly failed to perform a mandatory go-around or declare an emergency before the jet plowed through perimeter fencing and overran the runway by approximately 1,300 feet.
Braking Systems and Corporate Oversight Under Scrutiny
Investigators examining the wreckage found that key braking systems—including speed brakes and thrust reversers—failed to deploy during the landing sequence, based on recorded data recovered from the aircraft. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has been leading the ongoing investigation into the crash.
In addition to pilot actions, the lawsuit targets flight operator 21 Air for allegedly imposing demanding flight schedules, pushing crews to fly without proper rest, and ignoring prior safety complaints from former employees. The complaint also names aircraft owner Atlas Air, accusing the company of supplying an aging 32-year-old plane and failing to ensure essential stopping systems remained operational.
Amazon defended its reliance on independent contractors in a statement to Fox Business, calling the practice standard across commercial aviation. The company maintained that every jet operated on its behalf flew under FAA-certified air carrier programs featuring routine inspections, licensed personnel, and recurrent training.
Former Sacramento Kings Trainer Files Pregnancy Discrimination Suit
Crystal Lee, who worked for the team from 2022 until 2025, claims she was systematically marginalized and demoted during and after her pregnancy.
Lee alleges that senior director of athlete health Jaspreet Randhawa reacted hostilely when informed of her pregnancy, telling her she was f—ed
and asserting that her life is ruined after you have kids.
The suit states that Randhawa cultivated a workplace culture where employees were expected to work around the clock to prove their commitment.
The legal complaint outlines a series of professional setbacks following her pregnancy announcement. In February 2023, during her second trimester, the team stopped her from traveling for road games. By April 2023, the Kings demoted her from assistant athletic trainer to a remote-capable administrative role. Although management reportedly promised the change was temporary, the organization hired another full-time assistant athletic trainer ahead of the 2023–24 season and kept Lee off the road.
Dispute Escalation and Termination
The situation deteriorated further in September 2024, when the suit alleges Lee was stripped of her remaining athletic training duties and the title was removed from her job description. After raising formal concerns in April 2025 with Randhawa and vice president of player personnel Phil Jabour regarding her exclusion, management offered alternative positions with a G League affiliate and four other professional teams.
Lee met with general manager Scott Perry in May 2025 to discuss her treatment, where she was allegedly told that complainers will not be tolerated.
After informing human resources vice president Stacy Wegzyn about her grievances the following week, Lee was terminated the next month. The organization cited an alleged failure to meet performance expectations, including issues with updating expense reports.
Legal representatives for the team defended the organization’s practices. The Kings take allegations of discrimination and harassment seriously and are committed to maintaining a workplace where all employees are treated with dignity and respect,
attorney Alexis Gabrielson said in a statement. The organization intends to vigorously defend against these claims through the legal process and will not comment further on the pending proceedings.
Lee’s attorney, Robert King, noted that prior efforts to resolve the dispute through mediation were unsuccessful. Lee is seeking unspecified damages as the legal proceedings move forward.
