Two legislators were among six people injured in central Delhi on Sunday night, August 23, 2026, when an out-of-control car experienced a cylinder burst, crossed a divider near the PWD office at ITO, and collided head-on with an SUV carrying government board markings.
How the ITO Intersection Crash Unfolded in Central Delhi
The collision occurred at approximately 9:30 p.m. near the old Police Headquarters at the busy ITO intersection in central Delhi, according to reports from police and agency releases. A Swift car being driven by 32-year-old Ashutosh Pandey was travelling from Laxmi Nagar toward ITO alongside his wife and two minor children. According to a preliminary local inquiry by officials, the Swift’s driver lost control of the vehicle after its cylinder burst, causing it to strike a road divider near the Public Works Department (PWD) office.
The vehicle then breached the roadside railing, landed on the opposite side of the road, and collided with a Toyota Innova SUV coming from the opposite direction. The car got completely mangled due to the impact, while the Innova—which displayed a ‘Karnataka Government’ board—suffered heavy damage to its front portion. Visuals from the scene showed that all the airbags deployed following the accident. Police personnel and passersby rushed immediately towards the accident spot following the crash. A team of cops from the IP Estate Police Station also reached the spot upon receiving information, and found the two damaged cars.
Legislators and Families Among the Injured at LNJP Hospital
Occupying the Innova were Anil Jha, the sitting MLA from the Kirari Assembly constituency in Delhi, and Abhay Patil, an MLA from Karnataka. Alongside the two politicians, driver Ashutosh Pandey, his wife, and their two minor children also sustained injuries in the collision. All six individuals involved suffered minor injuries.
A PCR call regarding the road accident was received at the I P Estate police station around 9:30 pm, after which a police team arrived at the scene. All six injured victims were rushed and shifted to Lok Nayak Jai Prakash (LNJP) Hospital for treatment and are undergoing medical care. Police stated that their condition was stable.

“Today, at about 9:30 PM, a PCR call regarding a road traffic accident was received at PS I.P. Estate. On reaching the spot, two vehicles, an Innova and a Swift car, were found involved in the accident. As per preliminary local inquiry, the Swift car was being driven by Ashutosh Pandey, aged 32 years, who was travelling along with his wife and two minor children from Laxmi Nagar towards ITO. Near the PWD Office, the Swift car hit the divider and, after crossing the railing, collided with the Innova coming from ITO towards Laxmi Nagar,” the Delhi Police said.
Regarding the occupants of the SUV and their current medical status, the police added: The Innova was occupied by Anil Jha, sitting MLA from Kirari Vidhan Sabha, and Abhay Patil, MLA from Karnataka. All persons sustained minor injuries and were shifted to LNJP Hospital. All are in stable condition.
Emergency Response and Ongoing Police Investigation at ITO
The fire brigade was also called to the spot after information was received about a possible CNG leak. Fire personnel reached the site and attended to the situation. Both vehicles were subsequently removed from the road by the authorities, allowing traffic movement to return to normal. Traffic at the ITO crossing was disrupted for a while due to the accident.

Police stated that further investigation is ongoing to establish the exact circumstances leading to the accident. Officials are working to determine the exact cause of the cylinder burst and the speed of the vehicle during the accident, examining how the Swift hit the divider, crossed the railing, and ended up colliding with the Innova.
