Nicole Kidman was very fearful and deeply vulnerable after Keith Urban divorce

Nicole Kidman has opened up about her single era following her divorce from Keith Urban last September, admitting in a new British Vogue interview that the future remains completely unknown while she embraces a feelings-first approach to life and career.

Reflecting on the separation in a wide-ranging interview for the magazine’s September issue, the actor discussed navigating life changes under intense scrutiny. Kidman quietly filed for divorce from Urban in Nashville last September, citing marital difficulties and irreconcilable differences. By January, the legal process concluded when the separation was finalized out of court.

Custody Terms and Single Era Realities

The legal resolution avoided courtroom appearances. According to reporting on the filing, the couple agreed to share custody of their two daughters, Sunday Rose, 18, and Faith, 15, with neither party seeking spousal support.

Both hailing from Australia, Kidman and Urban met in Los Angeles in 2005 and married in Sydney the following year. It marked Urban’s first marriage and Kidman’s second.

Rather than relying on strict calculation, Kidman described her post-divorce mindset as intentionally led by intuition rather than excessive caution.

“That’s just who I am. I don’t overthink things and I’m probably not that analytical. I’m far more feeling-centered and I lead with my heart… It throws people, because I think they think I’ll be far more measured and I’m not,”

The actor added that her primary desire is to maintain openness despite the unexpected turn her personal life has taken, aiming for a well-examined life through trying things, making mistakes, failing, getting back up, and moving on.

“But at the same time I’m like, ‘OK, I didn’t expect this. I had a different view of what my life was going to be, but this is what it is now.’ You make all these plans and you have all these ideas of what it’s all going to be like and then it’s… not. You have to adjust. You adapt. The future, it’s completely unknown to me right now.”

Comparing High-Profile Divorces and Past Scrutiny

Facing public interest in a personal separation is familiar territory for the actor, who reflected on going through two divorces under intense media attention. This included her marriage to Tom Cruise, whom she married in 1990 at age 23 before their 2001 divorce.

Recalling the early days of her first marriage when Cruise was 28, she noted warnings she received about how wedding a major movie star might affect her professional trajectory.

“I remember people saying to me, ‘OK, well this is really going to affect your career’. I’m like, ‘I don’t care. I’m in love. I want to be married.’ And then I was his wife and they were like, ‘See, we told you.’ I’m like, ‘So what? I wasn’t meant to marry the man I love? Of course I’ll throw my career away. I don’t care.’”

When asked if weathering the intense media attention of her first divorce helped prepare her for public interest surrounding her separation from Urban, Kidman emphasized that every life chapter brings fresh challenges.

“It’s all new. Every time!”

Vulnerability, Hope, and Moving Forward

Addressing the emotional reality of uncertainty, Kidman admitted that acknowledging vulnerability can feel deeply exposing before pointing toward a resolute optimism and moving forward with an enormous amount of hope rather than curling up.

“There was a point where I was very fearful and deeply vulnerable, which is exposing. And then at the same time [I’m] going, ‘Well, I can either really not confront it and just curl up, or I can just go forward with an enormous amount of hope.’”

Outside of her reflections on marriage and family, Kidman has recently been linked to Michael Reinstein, an LA-based private equity investor. The two were spotted having a conversation on the balcony of her Portofino, Italy, hotel last month, though she has not commented publicly on the nature of their relationship.

Additionally, the actor shared details of maintaining privacy in everyday life, mentioning that she occasionally goes dancing in disguise by wearing glasses and a little dark wig while surrounded by people she brings with her.

“Sometimes I’ll wear a wig to hide, a little dark wig, and then I can just dance. As long as I’m surrounded by people – like, I take people with me – then I’m fine. I need it.”
