Shortly after the warning, Italian Eurofighter jets stationed on rotation scrambled to intercept and shoot down a drone that had crossed into Latvian airspace. The defensive action neutralized the threat over the Balvi region, allowing authorities to lift the emergency alert. The military initially withheld precise details regarding the origin of the unmanned aircraft, but the army spoke of a foreign drone that had entered Latvian airspace as a result of Russia’s electronic warfare.
It could also have been a misguided Ukrainian drone. Kyiv had targeted objectives in northwestern Russia overnight, according to Latvian broadcasting.
Regional Security Precautions Expand as Finland Restricts Transit Zones
While the immediate threat over Latvian territory cleared following the interception, defensive measures escalated in neighboring nations. Finland established a temporary restriction zone covering air and maritime traffic in the eastern Gulf of Finland as a precaution against potential drones.

Shortly after taking office at the end of May, the new administration concluded an agreement with Ukraine for closer cooperation in drone defense.
