Pet goose honks to alert family of barn fire, saving their animals

A four-month-old pet goose is being credited with saving a Richmond, Texas, family’s homestead after sounding a frantic alarm during a middle-of-the-night barn fire. The incident occurred on August 3, when the bird, named Goosey, began repeatedly squawking outside the structure, alerting the Gerber family to the unfolding emergency.

Goose Alerts Texas Family to Midnight Barn Fire

Bert Gerber, who had been asleep on the couch after staying up late, was awakened by the unusual noise. According to the family, Goosey is typically a quiet and shy animal, making his persistent honking particularly startling. Upon investigating the commotion, Bert discovered flames billowing from the barn, which housed the family’s chickens and turkeys.

I just casually came outside, and I saw a fire billowing out of there, Bert told local outlet KHOU. I grabbed a water hose and ran over there.

Bert successfully extinguished the blaze before it could spread. He noted that had the goose not alerted them, the situation likely would have escalated beyond the control of a garden hose within a couple more minutes. All animals inside the barn were accounted for and remained safe following the incident.

Security Footage Captures Heroic Effort

Home-security footage, later shared by Chelsea Gerber on social media, captured the dramatic moment the goose emerged from the barn and began pacing back and forth while honking. The video shows the bird making noise for several seconds, effectively acting as an unplanned alarm system for the property.

Investigation Into Fire Origins

While the family and their animals were unharmed, the exact cause of the fire remains under investigation. The Gerbers indicated that the blaze was most likely triggered by a ceiling wire that either overheated or had been chewed by an animal.

Experts suggest that such incidents highlight the critical importance of early warning systems on properties with outbuildings, where flames can spread rapidly. The Gerbers’ experience underscores the role pets can play in emergency situations, with Chelsea remarking that the event proved paying attention to your animals can matter more than you ever imagine.

In the aftermath of the rescue, the family is reportedly considering adding another goose, whom they plan to name Lucy, to join Goosey. Local authorities have reported no injuries to the family or their livestock, and the barn structure remains intact.
