United Airlines announced Tuesday that it is launching its largest international expansion to date, adding 10 new destinations across Europe and Asia starting next year. The push is part of a strategy to capitalize on changing traveler tastes, as passengers increasingly seek off-the-beaten path
locations over overcrowded, large European cities, according to Patrick Quayle, United’s senior vice president of global network planning and alliances. United Airlines stated it now flies to more than 160 international destinations and serves more locations in France, Italy, Portugal, Spain, and Japan than any other U.S. carrier.
United Airlines Announces Largest International Expansion in Company History
The airline has added 49 new destinations since 2021, with United being the only U.S. airline to provide nonstop service to 32 of those locations. Quayle noted that the carrier is aiming to be a “one-stop shop” for travelers at all stages of life, ranging from college students backpacking in Paris to business travelers and honeymooners visiting Sardinia. To support this growth, United is not dropping any existing routes to make room for the new additions.
New Route Destinations and Schedules
The expansion includes a heavy focus on Newark Liberty International Airport, which will serve as the gateway for the majority of the new European routes. The airline is also introducing new service from San Francisco and Washington Dulles.
The 10 new international destinations include:
- Okinawa, Japan: From San Francisco, starting March 27, 2027.
- Luxembourg City, Luxembourg: From Newark, starting April 2, 2027.
- Toulouse, France: From Washington Dulles, starting April 26, 2027.
- Ljubljana, Slovenia: From Newark, starting May 12, 2027.
- Olbia (Sardinia), Italy: From Newark, starting May 27, 2027.
- Ibiza, Spain: From Newark, starting May 31, 2027.
- Valencia, Spain: From Newark, starting June 2, 2027.
- Marseille, France: From Newark, starting June 4, 2027.
- Terceira, Portugal: From Newark, starting June 8, 2027.
- Catania (Sicily), Italy: From Newark.
In addition to these 10 cities, United is launching three other new routes: daily nonstop service from Denver to Paris starting May 27, 2027, and new flights from Washington, D.C., to Milan, Italy, and from Los Angeles to Osaka, Japan. The airline also plans to resume San Francisco to Tel Aviv service and launch flights from San Francisco to Sapporo, Japan, in December. Tickets for the first of the new international flights will go on sale Aug. 27, according to The Denver Post.
Fleet Strategy and the Airbus A321XLR
A central component of the expansion is the introduction of the Born to Explore
Airbus A321XLR. This long-range, single-aisle jet will support five new European routes in 2027, including service to Toulouse, Luxembourg, Ibiza, Valencia, and Marseille. The Toulouse route specifically targets aerospace business travel, as Airbus is based in that city.
United plans to begin international service with the A321XLR on Dec. 1, 2026, with flights from Washington Dulles to Dublin and Amsterdam. The aircraft will allow United to phase out its aging Boeing 757 fleet. While Quayle acknowledged some teething issues
with the A321XLR program, he stated the airline is confident it will have the necessary aircraft to operate the schedule. However, Airbus delays have already impacted the entry of United’s A321neo Coastliner fleet intended for premium transcontinental flights.
Other aircraft utilized in the expansion include the Boeing 777-200ER for the Okinawa route, the Boeing 767-400ER for Ljubljana, and the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner for the daily Denver to Paris service.
Shifting Travel Patterns and Market Competition
United CEO Scott Kirby told CNBC that international travel seasons have lengthened, with October now becoming one of the airline’s best months of the year. Quayle added that schedules are no longer being reduced as sharply following Labor Day, with demand remaining strong into October or November.
The airline is also adapting to a rise in “open-jaw” flights, where customers fly into one city and depart from another—such as arriving in Rome and leaving from Bari—to avoid backtracking. This trend has prompted United to increase its footprint in Italy, France, Spain, and Portugal.
This expansion comes as United, the second-most profitable U.S. airline, faces competition from Delta Air Lines. Delta’s president, Peter Carter, indicated in June that his airline intends to challenge United’s dominance, particularly regarding trans-Pacific flights, despite Delta currently having fewer international destinations.
