Nepal flash flood live updates: more than 1,000 people missing after glacial collapse at Tibet border

Massive flash floods triggered by a glacial collapse along the Nepal-Tibet border have killed at least 168 people and left more than 1,300 missing, including hundreds of foreign tourists, pilgrims, and local workers, according to authorities responding to the disaster.

Glacial Collapse and Seismic Revisions along the Border

The catastrophic disaster struck on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, sending a devastating wall of water and debris crashing down steep Himalayan valleys.

China’s Xinhua News Agency said Thursday that mudslides in Tibet caused by a glacial collapse have left three people dead and 558 missing, while police in Nepal reported at least 162 were killed after massive flash floods in a border area of Nepal and China swept through communities a day earlier. Chinese state broadcaster CCTV reported that 260 of the 558 missing people in Tibet were foreigners and two villagers were rescued. At least three people were killed as of Thursday morning, it said. The disaster in Nepal and Tibet is not a one-off. The Lhende Khola river system has now flooded twice in just 14 months and the increasingly unstable Himalayan ice system threatens communities, infrastructure and water supplies across one of the world’s most densely populated regions. The region saw similar flash floods in August last year, when a glacial lake in Tibet overflowed because of high temperatures. Nine people were killed, and critical infrastructure, including a bridge connecting Nepal and China, was damaged.

Casualties and Hundreds of Missing Foreign Nationals

Nearly 1,500 people are missing, the majority of whom are tourists, authorities have said, after a catastrophic flash flood hit Nepal and Tibet, roaring down valleys and wiping out entire villages, with the preliminary death toll standing at 165. Rescuers are racing to locate people missing in the mountainous region popular with trekkers and pilgrims, including the hundreds of nationals from India, the US, UK, Australia and Canada. Terrifying videos from the event on Wednesday showed a massive wall of water crashing down on the border as people attempted to flee. Trucks were upended and houses, roads and power projects swept away in Nepal, while officials in Tibet said they feared major casualties after a mudslide hit a border land crossing.

Almost 600 foreigners were among 826 people missing in Nepal, police and tourism officials said. Among those unaccounted were 177 from India, 63 from the US, 34 from Australia, 33 from Britain and 25 from Canada. Chinese state media said at least 558 were missing on the Tibet side of the border, of whom at least 260 were foreign nationals. Police in Nepal said 165 bodies had been recovered by late on Wednesday. Chinese state media reported three dead on the Tibet side of the border.

Survivor Accounts and Rescue Operations in Damaged Valleys

Rescue teams searched on Thursday for hundreds of missing people along the Nepal-China border after a catastrophic and deadly torrent of floods and mud swept through several communities a day earlier following a glacier collapse. The disaster left 168 people dead and more than 1,300 missing, including foreigners and pilgrims, and displaced hundreds of people across the Himalayan region. Videos of the tragedy showed the flood swallowing people as they tried to escape, and destroying buildings and bridges. On Thursday, drone footage from Nepal showed the scale of the destruction.

There was little time for anyone to flee. When I reached Dhunge bazaar, in half an hour, the flood came and damaged all the market. People were preparing to go to the office then, resident Shoyam Rajbhandari said. How many people are missing or dead, we don’t know.
