More than 12 years later, actress Shailene Woodley revealed she learned her scenes as Mary Jane Watson in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 were cut from the finished film, an omission producers attributed to an overcrowded 148-page script and too many character introductions.
Getting cast in a blockbuster franchise is usually cause for celebration, but for Shailene Woodley, finding out her role had vanished took a year. During a recent career retrospective interview for the SAG-AFTRA Foundation Conversations series, the actress discussed the emotional fallout of discovering her performance as Mary Jane Watson would never reach theaters in the May 2014 superhero sequel.
Childhood Dreams Interrupted by the Editing Room Floor
For Woodley, landing the part of Peter Parker’s famous comic-book love interest felt like a childhood milestone realized. Growing up, the character and the superhero franchise held a special place in her affections.

Woodley said she filmed “like three scenes together, me and Andrew Garfield. And then like a year later, they were like, ‘So, you’re not in the movie anymore.’ And I was like, ‘What? What do you mean?’ And they were like, ‘We’ve introduced a lot of new characters in this last one, and we’re going to wait for… whatever happens between [Emma Stone’s character, Gwen Stacy, who is Peter Parker’s girlfriend in the film] and Andrew.”

Woodley noted that she was initially given a specific narrative rationale for the delay by the creative team. According to the actress, studio planners suggested holding off on introducing the iconic red-headed character until after the tragic fate of Gwen Stacy played out on screen.
Woodley said she was also told, “’Let’s wait for [Gwen Stacy] to die and then we’ll introduce Mary Jane.’ Which made sense. But then they didn’t make that film.”
