Rengifo immediately collapsed to the dirt, where he lay motionless for roughly five minutes while athletic trainers and manager Craig Stammen rushed to his aid. Medical staff ultimately summoned a cart, and Rengifo departed the field with a towel held over his face while his teammates watched in somber silence.
The mood inside the Padres clubhouse following the 7-6 defeat reflected the swift and profound impact Rengifo has made since arriving in Southern California. The 29-year-old switch-hitter joined the organization on a minor league pact in June after being released by the Milwaukee Brewers, where he struggled through a $3.5MM guaranteed season batting just .205.
In San Diego, however, the low-cost flier paid immediate dividends.
