According to a long-time friend of the Prince, the announcement brought both surprise and excitement, with the possibility of old connections being rekindled and children playing together once more. A very old friend of the errant Prince says, “You could have knocked me down with a feather. So, so surprised but excited too. Since he has left I saw him once when I was in the States when I flew to the West Coast for work. Hardly anyone sees him when he visits the UK, apparently he has back-to-back events.”

While the logistics of the move appear to have been handled with significant discretion, the precise timeline of when King Charles was informed remains a subject of differing accounts. So far it has been widely reported that the King was informed on August 16, just three days before the rest of the world was briefed.
However, accounts differ regarding how the King was approached. A source inside the palace says, “Although I admit that I myself was as dumbfounded by the news as anyone else, I would be very surprised indeed if Harry had not consulted his father. My suspicion is that even they would not have sprung this on the King. Even they would know that would be a bad idea and more than that, that the King holds the purse strings.”
Behind the Decision to Leave California and Return to Britain
Although the couple built a new life in California after stepping back from royal duties, an insider told People that the move is something he has been thinking about for a while.
According to the insider, it apparently never fully clicked for him there, as he found it difficult to establish a close circle of friends while missing the long‑standing friends and community he had in the UK.
The insider explained, Harry never really stopped missing home. He's missed that sense of connection and belonging. Britain is still home in many ways.
Consequently, the relocation decision was not as abrupt as it may have seemed to fans, with plans in place for about a year and chosen together as a family.

It has also been rumored that Meghan received an acting offer in England, which would have made the decision easier. Gossip suggested this was for a role in Netflix’s The Gentlemen, but recent reports claim that the offer has since been rescinded. Harry and Meghan arrived in the UK with their children earlier this week and plan to take up a private, non‑royal residence, likely outside London. Another insider explained: Step by step, they want to be in the UK. They want to have the time and give the kids the opportunity to be here.
Archie and Lilibet now have the chance to learn about the traditions and family history their father grew up with, though their relocation is not expected to be permanent as they plan to keep their home in California.
Rebuilding Relationships and Facing Public Opinion in the UK
Returning to Britain brings complex social and familial dynamics. A recent poll shows that our once beloved prince polls at just 34 per cent popularity while Meghan comes in at 26 per cent, and only 27 per cent of the country want them to come home.
Family affairs are also going to take some managing. The King is ill with the cancer he has been battling since 2024 and is bent on friendship with his prodigal son, but Queen Camilla is said to be more wary.
