A Las Vegas jury has found former gang leader Duane Keith Davis guilty of the 1996 murder of rapper Tupac Shakur. The verdict brings a legal conclusion to one of music history’s most infamous unresolved killings, arriving nearly 30 years after the hip-hop legend was gunned down on the Las Vegas Strip at age 25.

After a weeks-long trial, a jury deliberated for about three hours before returning a guilty verdict against 63-year-old Duane Keith Davis, widely known as “Keffe D,” for his role in the fatal attack.
The trial of the former gang leader accused of orchestrating the murder of rapper Tupac Shakur began on August 10. The jury took about three hours to reach a guilty verdict in a case that relied heavily on multiple confessions from Davis himself, including his description of the killing in the 2019 memoir Compton Street Legend.
Shakur was born in 1971 in East Harlem, New York, and rose to fame in the early nineties, with poetic flow that doubled as sharp commentary on social injustice, including systemic racism, police brutality and the struggles felt by marginalized communities. Regarded among the greatest rappers to ever live, Shakur affected generations and continued to be celebrated around the world even years after his life was cut short. He was only 25 years old when he died in the hospital days after being shot four times in a car near the Las Vegas Strip.
How Duane Davis’s Own Words and Memoir Became Central Evidence
Although prosecutors did not accuse Davis of personally firing the shots that ended Shakur’s life, they argued that he orchestrated the retaliation and provided the firearm used in the shooting. The 63-year-old man who was accused of instigating the deadly shooting, although not pulling the trigger himself, had spent years telling investigators and interviewers alike of his direct involvement before he was arrested in 2023. Instead, they argued that Davis helped plan the retaliatory shooting and provided the gun used in the attack.
Over the weeks-long trial, Marc DiGiacomo, the Clark county district attorney, and Binu Palal, the chief deputy district attorney, brought 25 witnesses to the stand – including some who had to be ordered by the court because they were reluctant to testify – in their case against Davis.
