Davis, 63, is charged with murder with a deadly weapon with the intent to promote, further or assist a criminal gang, as reported by KCCI. He has pleaded not guilty and faces life in prison if convicted. The proceedings are taking place in Clark County District Court with Judge Carli Kierny presiding, according to Abc7news, and the trial is expected to last roughly a month.

The Prosecution’s Case and the Alleged Retaliation

According to prosecutors, Davis did not pull the trigger, but served as the “shot-caller” who organized the murder, provided the gun, and rode in the white Cadillac from which the gunfire erupted. Authorities allege that Davis plotted the attack to get revenge after Shakur and his entourage beat up Davis’ nephew, Orlando “Baby Lane” Anderson, at the MGM Grand hours before the shooting.

The shooting occurred on the night of September 7, 1996, in Las Vegas, where Shakur and music mogul Marion “Suge” Knight were in a black BMW heading to Club 662 after attending a Mike Tyson boxing match. A white Cadillac pulled up beside them at a stoplight at East Flamingo Road and Koval Lane, and gunfire rang out. Shakur, who was sitting in the passenger seat, was struck multiple times and died six days later at University Medical Center on September 13, 1996, at age 25. Knight sustained head injuries in the attack and survived.

For decades, the case remained unsolved amid a lack of physical evidence, feuding police departments, and a gangland code of silence. The investigation was revived following public statements and a tell-all memoir, Compton Street Legends, co-authored by Davis, in which he described his role in the events. Davis was arrested in September 2023 and has remained in custody ever since.

Witnesses, Defense Strategy, and Potential Testimony

Prosecutors plan to call between 35 and 45 witnesses over the course of the trial, including original investigators, former Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman, and members of Shakur’s family. Meanwhile, the defense plans to call a handful of witnesses, including an expert on false confessions who is expected to testify about coercive interrogation techniques and how memory degrades over time.

Marion “Suge” Knight, currently serving a 28-year sentence in California for voluntary manslaughter stemming from a 2015 hit-and-run, is listed as a possible witness for the prosecution. Knight remains the only living eyewitness to the shooting. In an interview with ABC News, Knight expressed reluctance to cooperate, stating that the trial has nothing to do with him and declaring, Leave me out of it.

Impact on Family and the Hip-Hop Community

Shakur remains one of the most influential and versatile rappers in history, having been nominated for six Grammy Awards and inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2017. The trial has drawn family, friends, and fans to Las Vegas. Members of Shakur’s family, including his stepbrother Maurice “Mopreme” Shakur, attended the proceedings, with family members noting that sitting through the trial is retraumatizing but important to stand by the late artist.
