The announcement followed months of relentless media attention surrounding her recent music video release for petal and persistent public commentary about her appearance. Representatives for Grande stated that she looked forward to finishing her tour on a high note, both healthily and happily, and then taking a much-deserved break from public-facing work and appearances, which has led to endless, ongoing public scrutiny. A day after revealing her plans, Grande assured fans that the choice was deliberate rather than impulsive. She noted on social media that boundaries are sometimes necessary and that human beings occasionally require a break, even when dealing with what she considered the greatest professional experience of her creative life. Grande has previously spoken out about public discourse surrounding her, including an April 2023 TikTok video addressing what it means to be a person with a body and to be seen and paid such close attention to, noting that people should be gentler and less comfortable commenting on bodies.
