New Space Telescope Heads Into Orbit To Answer Biggest Questions In The Universe

Following its successful August 30 launch from Florida, NASA’s Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope has achieved two major milestones. Engineers successfully deployed its 5.6-foot high-gain antenna and its deployable aperture cover visor, establishing critical communications and laying the groundwork for its upcoming cosmic mission.

The Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope is currently making its three-month journey to its new home at a Sun-Earth Lagrange point located a million miles from Earth.

Antenna and Sunshade Deployments Complete

The spacecraft’s operations hit key milestones over the weekend. Roman’s dual-band antenna, measuring 5.6 feet wide and weighing only 24 pounds, successfully finished its deployment at 2:03 p.m. EDT on August 31, following a four-minute sequence. Built from a lightweight carbon composite material designed to handle extreme temperature shifts, the antenna will transmit data across a million miles of space.

The high-gain antenna will handle the highest data volume of any NASA astrophysics mission to date. It utilizes two frequencies: one for commands and health tracking, and another to beam back data at up to 500 megabits per second to ground stations located in New Mexico, Australia, and Japan. Spreading these ground stations out ensures the team can maintain steady contact with the observatory.

Shortly after the antenna activation, the deployable aperture cover released EDT on September 1.

Next Milestones and Commissioning Timeline

With the initial hardware deployments finished, Roman moves directly into its next operational phase. The observatory’s next major milestone involves activating its Coronagraph Instrument. Within a couple of weeks, the Wide Field Instrument will also power on.

Both systems will complete a rigorous sequence of calibrations and tests during the remainder of the three-month commissioning period. NASA anticipates releasing the telescope’s first official images by early 2027.

Dual Missions: Exoplanets and Dark Energy

Named after Nancy Grace Roman, NASA’s first chief of astronomy and a key figure behind the Hubble Space Telescope, the observatory was built under budget and ahead of schedule using a primary mirror donated from a canceled National Reconnaissance Office spy program. Once operational next year, the telescope’s dual mandate targets two of astronomy’s biggest frontiers.

Half of the mission is dedicated to hunting exoplanets using the world’s most advanced Coronagraph Instrument, which blocks starlight to image dim planets orbiting nearby stars. Unlike previous missions that mostly captured young, infrared-bright planets far from their host stars, Roman will search closer planets in habitable zones, analyze exoplanet atmospheres for clouds, and examine ancient planetary systems.

The remaining half of the mission tackles dark energy, the mysterious force driving the accelerated expansion of the universe. By measuring how fast the universe expands against ordinary matter, scientists aim to clarify the fundamental composition and ultimate fate of the cosmos.
