United States Ambassador to India Sergio Gor arrived in Manipur on Friday for a two-day visit, meeting with Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla and Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh in Imphal to discuss bilateral ties and regional economic development following a stop in Darjeeling.

Accompanied by United States Consul General in Kolkata Kathy Giles-Diaz, the ambassador met with top state leadership to explore expanded economic cooperation and diplomatic engagement.
Meetings with Manipur Leadership in Imphal
Ambassador Gor kicked off his schedule by sitting down with Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla and Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh in Imphal on Friday. The two officials reviewed the trajectory of bilateral relations.

Following his discussions, Gor traveled to meet with Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh at the latter’s secretariat office. The chief minister welcomed the diplomatic delegation and emphasized the growing ties between the region and Washington, stating in a social media post: It was a pleasure to meet the Ambassador of United States to India, Sergio Gor, at my Secretariat today.
“We had the opportunity to discuss relations between the United States and Manipur. I am confident that the engagement between the United States and Manipur (India) will strengthen in the years to come.”

According to a Manipur government statement reported by NDTV, during the meeting, Sergio Gor said that Manipur is a stunning place with stunning beauty, and that he is very happy that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is focusing on the development of Northeast India, which is good for a diverse country like India.
Cultural Landmarks and Heritage Stops
Earlier in the day, Gor visited the historic Kangla Fort, which served as the ancient political and cultural centre of the erstwhile Manipur kingdom, and the iconic women-run Khwairamband Ema Keithel.
The US Ambassador will spend the night in the capital city, Manipur government sources told NDTV.
Darjeeling Tea Plantations Prior to Northeast Leg
Gor visited Darjeeling on Thursday, following a personal invitation from Rajya Sabha MP, former Foreign Secretary, and former Indian Ambassador to the US, Harsh Vardhan Shringla.
Gor highlighted the personal invitation that brought him to the hill station, noting the warm reception he received upon arriving in India.

The US envoy also immersed himself in the region’s rich heritage at one of the oldest tea gardens in the hills. Sharing a picture from the lush plantations, Ambassador Gor wrote: Great to be in Darjeeling! Started my visit with one of the region's most iconic traditions – a stop at the historic @MakaibariTea Estate and, of course, a cup of world-famous Darjeeling tea.
