Cerrado Deforestation Falls 19% While Amazon Alerts Rise 12% in August

Alerts in the Cerrado fell 19% in August compared to last year, losing 238 square kilometers of vegetation, while the Amazon saw a 12% rise. In response, Environment Minister João Paulo Capobianco signed a decree creating priority water-recharge areas across the biome to protect essential river basins.

Marking the official Dia do Cerrado on Friday, the Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas Espaciais (Inpe) released satellite monitoring figures showing that deforestation alerts across the region dropped 18.9% in August relative to the same month in 2025.

In absolute terms, the Cerrado lost 238 square kilometers of native vegetation this past August, down from 294 square kilometers during the same period last year, according to data from the Deter real-time detection system. Officials noted that this marks the second-best August performance in the history of the Deter series, which began tracking data in 2018.

Contrasting Dynamics Between the Cerrado and the Amazon

While the Cerrado continued a downward trend, the Amazon experienced a 12% increase in deforestation alerts during August. Cleared areas in the rainforest rose from 319 square kilometers last year to 358 square kilometers in 2026.

Environment Minister João Paulo Capobianco attributed the Amazonian uptick primarily to the state of Pará, where federal support for police operations alongside environmental inspection agencies experienced a temporary lapse. To combat habitat loss and safeguard regional water supplies, Capobianco signed two key administrative decrees on Friday in São Paulo. The first establishes Áreas Prioritárias de Recarga Hídrica no Bioma Cerrado (APRHIC), creating a legal mechanism to identify and protect zones critical for feeding underground aquifers.

Yuri Salmona, Executive Director of Instituto Cerrados, noted that the decree updates the management paradigm by recognizing, for the first time on a biome scale, the strategic role of recharge areas.

The Cerrado functions as the source for 8 of the country’s 12 major hydrographic basins, supplying roughly 94% of the water for the São Francisco River. Survey data indicates that more than half of the biome’s total area qualifies as a priority for hydrological recharge.

When deep-rooted native plants are removed, the land loses its infiltration capacity, raising the risk that local rivers will run dry. State environmental secretariats are expected to incorporate this mapping data directly into their deforestation authorization and licensing workflows.

Cumulative figures from January through August show a 7% decrease in Cerrado deforestation, totaling 3.810 km², while Amazonian losses fell 31% to 2.041 km² over the same eight-month span. Yet combined losses across both regions approach nearly 6.000 km² this year—an area comparable to the Federal District.
