In an exclusive interview, Ethiopian Electric Power Chief Executive Officer Ashebir Balcha detailed how the facility has transformed the state-owned utility’s financial standing. Once carrying a heavy debt burden, the enterprise has shifted into a profitable institution delivering record revenue during the concluded fiscal year.
Regional Energy Integration Through the Eastern Africa Power Pool
Ethiopia is leveraging its generation capacity to supply clean, competitively priced electricity across borders. Through the Eastern Africa Power Pool, the country exports power to Kenya, Djibouti, Sudan, and, more recently, Tanzania, deepening energy cooperation throughout the Horn of Africa.
Domestic energy markets are also expanding rapidly. According to utility figures, domestic electricity revenue surpassed 124 billion birr, underscoring the dam’s expansive footprint across the domestic economy alongside its export utility.

Downstream Water Regulation and Operational Readiness
Beyond generating watts, the massive reservoir serves a crucial hydrological function. Utility leadership noted that the dam actively regulates river flow, establishing a more stable and predictable water supply for downstream neighbors Sudan and Egypt.
With holiday seasons approaching, Ethiopian Electric Power is coordinating with the Ethiopian Electric Utility to execute joint line inspections. Teams are maintaining strict operational readiness to guarantee uninterrupted power distribution for industrial plants and households nationwide.
Commemorating Excellence Days and Historic Parallels
To celebrate these operational and financial milestones, Ethiopian Electric Power officially designated September 9—corresponding to Pagumen 4 on the Ethiopian Calendar and marking the anniversary of the dam’s inauguration—as its annual Excellence Day. During the inaugural observance, management recognized outstanding project operators, support teams, and employees for their dedication.
Reflecting on the project’s cultural weight, Ashebir drew a parallel to national history, describing the dam as a “Second Adwa.” The designation links the engineering feat to the historic victory at Adwa, which remains an enduring symbol of unity and African resistance against colonial invasion.
