Dubai Film Festival Returns for 15th Edition in 2027

The Dubai Media Council announced during the Arab Media Summit that the Dubai International Film Festival will return on December 8, 2027. The festival’s 15th edition will focus on Middle Eastern and Arab cinema.

Dubai Media Council Announces Festival Revival at Arab Media Summit

More than two decades after its initial launch, the Dubai International Film Festival is officially returning to the cultural calendar. The announcement was made on the final day of the Arab Media Summit, drawing regional and international media leaders to the emirate. Sheikha Latifa bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairperson of Dubai Culture and Arts Authority, attended the closing session where the revival was confirmed by the Dubai Media Council, in the presence of various ministers and Arab and international media leaders.

Organizers have set December 8, 2027, as the official start date for the 15th edition. The event spent a decade away from the public eye, having stopped organizing activities for 10 full years following its last run from December 6 to 13, 2017. That final 2017 iteration showcased approximately 140 films spanning 51 countries and 38 languages.

A New Vision Rooted in Arab Cinema and Talent Development

Mona Ghanem Al Marri, Vice President and Managing Director of the Dubai Media Council and Chairperson of the Dubai Press Club, outlined the strategic shift for the festival’s comeback. Rather than simply reviving past editions, the 15th installment is designed as an integrated creative platform dedicated specifically to Middle Eastern and Arab films, directors, producers, actors, and writers, opening a broader space for directors, producers, actors, and writers to showcase their experiences and works, and to connect with cinema audiences, critics, and industry specialists.

Before more than 20 years, and specifically in 2004, the Dubai International Film Festival was launched with a clear vision, which is that Dubai should be a window for Arab cinema to the world, and a bridge that brings together creators, filmmakers and different cultures in one place, said Mona Ghanem Al Marri, addressing the Arab Media Summit. She noted that over 14 years, the festival became one of the most prominent cinematic platforms in the region, opened new doors for hundreds of Arab talents and works, and put Dubai on the map of the global film industry.

She emphasized that the modern landscape requires a different approach to match the ambitions of contemporary creators. Today, we are bringing back the Dubai International Film Festival, but we are not bringing back the past, we are building on its heritage to start a new chapter, Al Marri stated, noting that regional ambition and the filmmaking industry have both evolved significantly. She added that the first edition of the festival in its new phase will be dedicated to celebrating Middle Eastern films and its creators, because our region does not lack creativity, stories, or talent, but needs the platform that gives these stories the space they deserve and delivers them to the global audience and markets.

Building an Ecosystem for Global Markets

The revamped event aims to function as an industry ecosystem rather than a standard screening series. Council plans detail a structure that connects directors with producers, talent with investors, and ideas with the market, opening the field for new partnerships and projects starting from Dubai to the world. The event will not just be days for screening films, but an integrated system that brings creators together.

The new cycle carries a direction that puts Arab talents at the core of the cinematic experience, allowing young energies to introduce their works and ideas and interact with prominent cinematic names and experiences. The festival also seeks to be a space for dialogue on the reality and future of Arab cinema, the challenges facing its makers, and the opportunities provided by rapid transformations in content creation, alongside discovering talents capable of presenting Arab stories with new visions and methods.

Concluding her speech, Mona Al Marri stated: Today, with the completion of the media work system in Dubai under the umbrella of the Dubai Media Council, the return of the festival comes as a natural step within a new phase to develop the cinema and production sector, and build a more competitive and impactful creative economy. Our ambition goes beyond organizing a successful festival. Our ambition is to contribute to building an industry, discovering a new generation of creators, and making Dubai the place where the story of Arab talent begins and reaches the world through it. In 2004, we started a journey, and today, we start a new journey from Dubai for the stories of our region, and from our region to the world.
