When Cristina Rapti-Tzelepi and her husband decided to pursue another attempt using a decades-old embryo, they faced a strict legislative barrier. Under Greek regulations, the absolute cutoff for women to complete in vitro fertilization procedures and secure authorization from a national authority is 54 years of age.
Having recently suffered the loss of their 21-year-old son, Giorgos, in an October road crash, the couple had a tightly constricted window to move forward. Rapti-Tzelepi, turning 54, recounted the pressure of navigating the medical and bureaucratic hurdles.

Reviving an Embryo Cryopreserved in March 2004
The biological material behind the birth dates back more than two decades. According to details shared by Genesis Athens Clinic and reported by Newsweek, the batch of embryos was originally cryopreserved on March 17, 2004. The successful transfer took place on December 23, 2025.

Medical teams at the clinic calculated that the exact duration between the initial freezing and the delivery spanned 22 years, five months, and 23 days. While international records include embryos frozen for longer periods—such as an Ohio case from the previous year involving an embryo stored for over 30 years through embryo adoption—the Greek medical team noted that this instance represents an exceptionally long duration utilizing autologous reproductive material from the same patient.
“In 2025 our lives changed forever. The loss of our 21-year-old child left a void that no words can describe. Our house was filled with silence and time seemed to have stopped. In this darkness we decided to hold on to something that had been left behind in time: the embryos we had cryopreserved in 2004,”

Medical Significance and Debate Over Greek Legislation
The family’s gynecologist, Dr. Konstantinos Pantos—who also serves as head of the Hellenic Society of Reproductive Medicine—described the outcome as a deeply moving moment, both scientifically and personally
. Dr. Pantos confirmed that the clinical and laboratory data collected from the case are slated for submission to an international scientific journal for formal peer review.
Dr. Pantos pointed out that the country’s strict age ceiling makes no allowance for individual health evaluations.
“The law is very strict: 54 plus one day is not allowed. Maybe it’s time for it to change,” said Pantos, a native of Melbourne, Australia. “I think it’s a right (parents) should not be deprived of.”

While the couple retains nine additional frozen embryos from the 2004 batch, current Greek statutes prevent them from utilizing them locally due to age constraints, leaving the family to consider pursuing further attempts abroad.
