Apple has introduced the iPhone Duo, its first foldable smartphone, with a starting price of $1,999. The device features a 7.6-inch inner display and a 5.4-inch outer display, the latter of which provides 90 percent of the screen area of the iPhone 18 Pro.
Design and Hardware
According to Apple, the iPhone Duo is the thinnest iPhone ever when opened. The inner display includes a nano-texture finish to reduce glare and is protected by a scratch-resistant coating and a custom polymer cover layer. The device is available in night sky and star white colors.
The phone is powered by the A20 Pro chip and utilizes a precision hinge composed of more than 100 components. For durability, the device carries an IP68 rating for splash-, water-, and dust-resistance. It features Ceramic Shield on the back and Ceramic Shield 2 on the front, which Apple says offers three times the scratch resistance of the previous generation.
Both displays include ProMotion and Always On technology, with a peak outdoor brightness of 3000 nits. The iPhone Duo will also support the Apple Pencil with USB-C later this year. Security is handled via Touch ID integrated into the side button or through an Apple Watch.
Software and Market Outlook
Apple redesigned iOS for the foldable form factor, enabling content and apps to scale automatically between the two screens. The device also integrates Siri AI and Apple Intelligence. CEO John Ternus described the iPhone Duo as the most transformational change to the product line since the original iPhone.
Investor Gary Black predicts the iPhone Duo will trigger a new hardware upgrade cycle and increase Apple’s average selling price, particularly among 20- and 30-somethings who may view the phone as a status symbol. Black also noted that the folding design allows business travelers to carry one device instead of two, though he warned that limited production could restrict incremental earnings for potentially six months.
Analyst Gene Munster increased his fiscal 2027 iPhone revenue forecast for the device from 5% to 10%.
Pre-orders for the iPhone Duo open on Oct. 16, with store availability beginning Oct. 23.
