Airbnb Searches Surge 610% Ahead of Pope Leo XIV Visit to Lourdes

As the city prepares for 150,000 expected pilgrims, available hotel prices have skyrocketed by up to forty-six times their normal rates.

When Pope Leo XIV arrives in Lourdes for a weekend of papal celebrations on September 26 and 27, 2026, the sanctuary town will see an influx of 150,000 visitors drawn to the scheduled prayer at the grotto, a mass on the prairie, and a traditional torchlight procession.

Online booking platforms reflect the massive demand, with Airbnb reporting that accommodation searches surged by 610 percent compared to the same period in 2025. Demographic data provided by the short-term rental platform shows that Millennials, born between 1981 and 1996, account for 34 percent of travelers, closely followed by Generation X, born between 1965 and 1980, at 33 percent. Generation Z travelers, born between 1997 and 2012, make up 13 percent of total reservations.

Most visitors plan brief itineraries. Over half of all reservations, exactly 51 percent, cover just a single night, while 46 percent of travelers intend to stay for two nights or longer. Group travel dominates the bookings, with more than three out of four reservations organized as shared stays among family and friends. Duos lead the categories at 36 percent, followed by groups of three to five people at 21 percent, and families at 20 percent.

While international interest spans the United States, Argentina, Germany, and Spain, the vast majority of travelers remain domestic. French visitors account for 89 percent of all reservations recorded for the historic weekend.

Hotel Rates Spike Up to a Fortune a Night as Hosts Shift Strategies

Traditional hotels are experiencing an even more dramatic pricing squeeze. With remaining rooms dwindling to single digits, a check of online booking platforms reveals that entry-level accommodations climb to 728 euros for the night of September 26, compared to roughly forty euros during regular periods.

The staggering costs have sparked sharp reactions from visitors and pilgrims who view Lourdes as a historic sanctuary for the sick, the impoverished, and diocesan pilgrimages. One visitor declared that it was shameful and that people who believe in God were being exploited, noting that those who wanted to see the pope would pay whatever it cost, while another added that they would rather go to Rome and pay for the trip with that kind of money.

An unnamed tourist noted via France 3 Occitanie that it was far too expensive and wondered who could possibly afford to pay that much, stating that nobody could.

Some accommodation providers are deliberately withholding inventory to capitalize on last-minute panic. Vincent Luxman, manager of the two-star hotel Le Milan, confirmed that he removed all of his rooms from online availability ahead of the papal visit. He explained that he had a strong chance of selling those rooms at a high price at the last minute, describing the move as a conscious yield management decision, and noted that it was an experiment and a choice he had made, which was why he had blocked out his entire hotel for the time being.

Other hoteliers dispute the extreme hikes. David Igual, director of the four-star hotel Astrid, acknowledged that price adjustments are expected during major events but distanced himself from four-figure rates at budget properties. He estimated that rates increasing, doubling, or tripling seemed normal for such an event, though he added that when dealing with a small two-star or three-star hotel starting out at 1,000 euros a night, it truly felt excessive to him.

Economic Impact on Local Businesses and Manufacturers

Local manufacturing is already straining to keep pace with the approaching event. At the local candle workshop, production has been increased by 20 percent to supply the demand for the weekend, with workers noting that for a single day, they had to produce more over the course of three weeks.

The financial stakes for the city are substantial. According to data released by Airbnb, visitors hosted through the platform spent over 11 million euros in local commerce during 2024, sustaining more than 2,490 jobs. Additionally, tourist taxes collected via the platform exceeded 125,000 euros in 2025—a figure expected to rise significantly under the weight of the papal gathering.

These financial injections arrive at a critical juncture for Lourdes. Figures published by Insee Occitanie show that tourism attendance across collective accommodations in Lourdes dropped by 17.7 percent between 2012 and 2024, contrasting with a 4.5 percent average increase across the broader region.
