The BBC has acquired the new five-part Irish factual drama The Murder of Mr. Moonlight, starring Brendan Coyle, Sinéad Keenan, and Owen McDonnell. The series explores the 2011 disappearance and murder of Tipperary DJ Bobby Ryan, whose high-profile case led to Patrick Quirke’s 2019 murder conviction after one of Ireland’s longest trials.
A landmark criminal investigation that gripped Ireland for over a decade is heading to television screens. The BBC acquired the new factual drama titled The Murder of Mr. Moonlight, commissioned by RTÉ in association with Screen Ireland and Banijay Rights.
Cast and Production Team Behind the Factual Drama
The production features a prominent Irish and international cast. Brendan Coyle, known for his work in Downton Abbey and Toxic Town, stars as Bobby Ryan. Sinéad Keenan, recognized from Unforgotten and Little Boy Blue, portrays Mary Lowry, while Owen McDonnell of Killing Eve and Bad Sisters plays Patrick Quirke.
Additional cast members include Hazel Doupe as Bobby’s daughter, Michelle Ryan, and Carolyn Bracken as Pat’s wife, Imelda Quirke. The ensemble is rounded out by Ian Lloyd Anderson, Danny Power, Helena Browne, Muiris Crowley, Aidan O’Hare, Emmet Byrne, and Pom Boyd.
The series is adapted for television by screenwriter Malcolm Campbell, whose previous credits include What Richard Did. Production duties are handled by Conker Pictures, part of Banijay UK, and Samson Films, with additional funding provided by Screen Ireland. Directing duties are shared by Daithaí Keane and Rachel Carey.
Revisiting the Bobby Ryan Investigation and Trial
The drama centers on the disappearance of Bobby Ryan in June 2011 after he left the home of his girlfriend, Mary Lowry, located at Fawnagowan outside Tipperary town. Ryan was widely known across the locality under his stage name, “Mr. Moonlight,” due to his work as a local DJ performing regularly in pubs, clubs, and social venues.
Nearly two years later, in April 2013, Ryan’s badly decomposed body was discovered inside a disused underground tank on farmland owned by Lowry and leased by Patrick Quirke. Prosecutors during the subsequent trial argued that Quirke murdered Ryan to rekindle an affair he previously had with Lowry. The sensational love-triangle elements fueled intense media scrutiny, making the resulting legal proceedings one of the longest and highest-profile trials in modern Irish history. Patrick Quirke was convicted of murder in 2019 and sentenced to life imprisonment.
Behind the Creative Vision and Family Involvement
Producers and network executives emphasize that the drama aims to move past sensational courtroom headlines to focus on the human reality of the tragedy. Family members, including Bobby Ryan’s daughter Michelle Ryan, contributed to the production, and other impacted individuals were invited to participate.
“I was drawn to this story because of the people caught up in it, the human factor, the cost of it all. At its heart are real people whose lives were profoundly affected by these events. Our responsibility has been to approach the process with care, sensitivity and rigorous research, while exploring the relationships and circumstances that made this case so compelling.”
Samson Films Executive Producer David Collins added that the project deliberately avoids a mere re-enactment, striving instead for psychological depth and emotional sensitivity. Meanwhile, RTÉ Head of Drama David Crean praised Campbell’s script and the sensitive direction brought to the project, and BBC Head of Scripted Pre-Buy Acquisitions Sue Deeks observed that while the case gripped Ireland for years, it remains relatively unknown to audiences in the UK.
