Alan Jones trial live updates: Court hears brother of complainant J received gifts

Alan Jones, 85, is facing trial in the Downing Centre Local Court after pleading not guilty to 20 counts of indecent assault and two counts of sexual touching. The proceedings, which involve six complainants, include testimony from a former athlete, known as Complainant J, who alleges the broadcaster touched his penis and kissed him between 2003 and 2020.

The trial has entered its second week with the Crown calling witnesses to support the allegations made by Complainant J, a former youth athlete. While the defendant has strenuously denied the charges, the court has heard testimony regarding a relationship defined by significant financial support and alleged sexual boundary crossings.

Financial Support and the ‘McDonald’s’ Disclosure

The brother of Complainant J testified on Tuesday that he only learned of the alleged abuse after Alan Jones was arrested in late 2024. The witness described a meeting at a McDonald’s restaurant where his younger brother revealed he was one of the people coming forward with allegations.

When asked why the abuse had not been disclosed decades earlier, J told his brother that he did not want the money and support to stop. The court heard that Jones provided J with a car, a mobile phone, and a weekly training allowance that ranged from $400 to $600 per week.

“Nothing too bad, he didn’t try to fuck me or anything like that. He would grab me on the cock, he would kiss me, those sort of things.”

The brother’s testimony also highlighted Jones’s generosity toward the wider family. He recalled the broadcaster offering to help him purchase an engagement ring for his fiancée and gifting a Villeroy & Boch dinner set as a wedding present. Despite these ties, the witness told the court he never saw Jones act inappropriately toward his brother during visits to the 2GB studios or Jones’s homes at Circular Quay and Fitzroy Falls.

The Fitzroy Falls Trip and Immediate Reactions

The court heard from Complainant J’s ex-girlfriend regarding a specific trip to Jones’s property in Fitzroy Falls. She testified that when J returned to her home immediately after leaving the property, he appeared not himself and looked as if he’d seen a ghost.

According to ABC News & Headlines – Australian Broadcasting Corporation, the woman recalled J telling her in her lounge room that Alan Jones had touched him inappropriately. She testified that J then aggressively told her she could not tell anyone about the incident and gave a firm no when asked if he wanted to report it to the authorities.

The pair, who were in a relationship for about two years during the 2000s, had reconnected in recent years. The ex-girlfriend testified that J messaged her shortly after the 2024 arrest, stating, I’d like to come forward and tell my truth.

Defense Challenges and Allegations of Lying

Defense barrister Gabrielle Bashir SC has challenged the credibility of the allegations, suggesting that Complainant J may have “concocted” his evidence based on media reports. This line of questioning focused heavily on J’s previous denials of the abuse.

The court was told that in late 2023, when allegations against Jones first appeared in the media, J’s mother asked him if the broadcaster had touched him. J admitted to the court that he told his mother Jones had not, and later acknowledged, Yes, I lied to her then.

J explained his silence to the court, stating he was not prepared at the time and feared his mother would push him to go to the police. He told the court he believed he would be crushed in court and that no one would believe me.

Case Status and Next Witnesses

The proceedings are being overseen by Judge Glenn Walsh. The defense has also questioned the nature of J’s recent communications with his ex-partner, specifically a December 2024 text message where J promised to look after her once the legal matters were over. J denied the defense’s suggestion that this was a financial reward for her police statement, asserting he was offering to be there as a friend.
