Pierce battled left ankle and heel pain throughout the 2025 campaign, managing it initially with a platelet-rich plasma injection before undergoing a surgical clean-up procedure in late March to address a bone issue. That operation carried a projected four-to-six-month recovery window. Although general manager Chris Ballard expressed early optimism that Pierce would miss only a week or two of training camp, the rehabilitation lingered. Pierce returned to practice just two weeks before the regular season opener against the Baltimore Ravens, playing a modest 32 snaps before the team attempted to ramp up his workload against Kansas City.
Offensive Void and Roster Adjustments in Indianapolis
Pierce’s absence creates a substantial challenge for an Indianapolis offense built around vertical stretching. After securing 47 catches for 1,003 yards and six touchdowns in 2025—leading the NFL in yards per reception in each of the past two seasons—Pierce signed a four-year, $114 million contract extension in March.
Without Pierce clearing out defensive secondary schemes downfield, opposing defenses can compress the line of scrimmage. When questioned by reporters regarding whether Pierce might suit up for the upcoming matchup against the Houston Texans, Steichen admitted uncertainty, stating simply I don’t know,
