From Melbourne Pubs to International Heavy Metal Charts
Born in Melbourne on August 5, 1947, and raised in the working-class suburb of Coburg, Anderson cut his teeth in the early 1970s pub rock scene with bands like Buster Brown—which featured future AC/DC drummer Phil Rudd—before co-founding Rose Tattoo in 1976. Armed with slide guitarist Peter Wells and Anderson’s unyielding vocals, the band quickly carved out a reputation for playing totally aggressive, take no prisoners, spare no one, have no mercy-type music that stood entirely apart from the era’s standard rock outfits.
While mainstream Australian television and radio initially kept their distance—notably after a famously quirky chewing-gum exchange on the ABC program Countdown led to a lifetime ban—international audiences embraced the raw energy of the band. Their self-titled 1978 debut album and its follow-up, Assault and Battery, both surged to No 1 on the British heavy metal charts in 1981, cementing their status as global outlaws of the pub rock genre. Despite his hardline stage persona, Anderson achieved commercial crossover as a solo artist in 1987 with the power ballad Suddenly. The track became a national phenomenon after soundtracking the wedding of Scott and Charlene—played by Jason Donovan and Kylie Minogue—on the soap opera Neighbours. The song peaked at No. 2 on the Australian charts, blocked from the top spot only by Minogue’s debut single Locomotion, and climbed to No. 3 in the UK.
