A powerful El Nino phenomenon driving global record heat is projected to cause 15,800 deaths in India by the end of February. According to a research report from the University of Chicago-based Climate Impact Lab, as many as 451,000 more deaths between June and February of next year could be attributed to the climate pattern, when compared to typical heat-related deaths in a year.

This year’s powerful El Nino pattern is contributing to severe droughts, wildfires, and water shortages worldwide. According to the Climate Impact Lab report released on Wednesday, the extreme heat is proving most dangerous in regions that are already hot and relatively poor, pointing to severe impacts across the Global South.
US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Observations
El Nino is a natural climate phenomenon that occurs every two to seven years toward the end of the year. Patterns are considered strong when surface water temperatures off the west coast of South America exceed 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 degrees Fahrenheit) above average. In July, the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration observed temperature increases greater than 3 degrees Celsius in the eastern and central Pacific.
Mitigation Challenges in India and Urban Preparedness
Governments can protect populations through targeted interventions. The Climate Impact Lab report recommends heat warnings, hydration outreach, cooling centers, expanded hospital capacity, anticipatory financing, and comprehensive heat coping plans.
New Delhi Cooling Stations and Urban Resources
During the summer of 2026, New Delhi operated several cooling stations across the city. However, resource distribution remains uneven, as not all cities and towns have the same resources.
Abhiyant Tiwari, a heat expert at NRDC India who did not participate in the study, noted that the projections should motivate action rather than panic. While India has well-formulated plans in place, execution remains a major hurdle.
