The iPhone Duo enters China’s crowded foldable market and faces a price test

Apple unveiled its first foldable phone, the $1,999-and-up iPhone Duo, at a Cupertino event on September 9, 2026. The device features a 7.6-inch inner display and 5.4-inch outer screen powered by the A20 Pro chip, entering a fiercely competitive Chinese market where local rivals already sell established book-style and trifold handsets.

The iPhone Duo Design and Hardware Specifications

Apple introduced its first foldable device during an 80-minute presentation at the Steve Jobs Theater in Cupertino, California, led by new CEO John Ternus. Opened up, the device serves as the thinnest iPhone ever built, featuring a 7.6-inch inner Super Retina XDR display that is 50 percent larger than iPhone 18 Pro Max. Closed, the 5.4-inch outer Super Retina XDR display delivers 90 percent of the screen area of iPhone 18 Pro in a compact, pocketable form factor.

Both displays share an identical aspect ratio to ensure visual continuity when opening or closing the hardware. The screens support ProMotion, Always-On capabilities, and reach up to 3000 nits of peak outdoor brightness. Beneath the inner display sits a hidden FaceTime camera, while the exterior incorporates a nano-texture finish designed to minimize glare and reflection.

“iPhone Duo is the most transformational change to iPhone since the original. With an entirely new design and intuitive experiences, it shows what’s possible when hardware and software are engineered together and redefines what it means to use a foldable phone.”

The enclosure is built from grade 5 titanium with an abrasive mirror-polished finish, paired with a 3D-printed hinge cover that relies on more than 100 precision components. Protection is handled by Ceramic Shield on the rear and a tougher Ceramic Shield 2 on the front offering three times better scratch resistance than previous generations. Apple also integrated Touch ID directly into the side button, added an IP68 dust and water resistance rating, and included a dual-battery architecture paired with a custom vapor chamber for thermal management.

Pricing and Market Realities in China

While Apple positioned the hardware as a massive leap forward, the initial reception in Greater China highlighted intense pricing pressures. Priced at 15,999 yuan, equivalent to $2,230 in China compared to the U.S. starting price of $1,999, the device faces an uphill battle in a territory that accounts for roughly 17 percent of Apple’s total revenue.

Chinese consumers voiced financial hesitations on social media platforms like WeChat. One widely shared user calculation noted the disparity between domestic purchasing power and the hardware cost, with a commenter pointing out that U.S. buyers earn between $3,000 and $4,000 a month while local consumers face similar or lower earnings matched against a 10,000-plus-yuan outlay. Social media reactions suggested some prospective buyers plan to wait for subsequent hardware iterations, with one WeChat post stating, I won’t buy it this year. I’ll buy the second-generation foldable next year.

Beyond cost concerns, potential mainland buyers pointed to the absence of a physical SIM-card slot on the Duo, a design choice that requires users to visit a carrier store for ID verification to activate an eSIM profile.

Competition from Huawei, Xiaomi, and Samsung

Apple is entering a crowded foldable sector in China where domestic manufacturers already dominate multiple form factors. Major rivals including Huawei, Xiaomi, Honor, Oppo, and Vivo offer book-style foldables, flip devices, and trifold options.

The launch timing coincided with aggressive product rollouts from local competitors. Xiaomi and Huawei debuted new flagship foldables ahead of Apple’s presentation, introducing the Xiaomi 18 Fold at 10,999 yuan and Huawei’s trifold Mate XT2 at 19,999 yuan. Although one online reviewer noted that the iPhone Duo is cheaper than Huawei. Can you take it? Huawei held the top spot in China’s smartphone market across the first and second quarters according to Counterpoint data, with Apple ranking second ahead of Vivo and Oppo.
