Avanti West Coast will be brought into public ownership on March 7, 2027, as the British government takes over the private rail franchise following persistent underperformance, cancellations, and overcrowding across its network.
Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander announced the nationalisation plan, bringing forward the transition date from an original October schedule. The operator’s existing contract was due to expire on March 7. Prime Minister Andy Burnham echoed the decision, declaring that passengers had been failed repeatedly by the current service connecting Edinburgh, Glasgow, Manchester, Birmingham, and London.
FirstGroup Joint Venture Loses Franchise Following High Cancellation Rates
Avanti West Coast is operated by First Trenitalia West Coast Rail, a joint venture between FirstGroup holding a 70% stake and Italian state operator Trenitalia holding 30%. The consortium originally secured the franchise in August 2019 and launched services on December 8 of that year under a contract scheduled to run until 2032.
“For years, we’ve heard stories of Avanti underperforming, with passengers left paying the price. Enough is enough.”

The operator recorded the highest proportion of cancellations in Britain over the summer, reaching twice the national average. Those cuts targeted West Coast Main Line connections between London Euston, Birmingham, Liverpool, and Manchester in response to a Department for Transport request for spending reductions.
Government Infrastructure Investment and Station Upgrades Planned for Euston
Alongside the ownership transfer, the government announced an extra £10 million dedicated to power and signalling maintenance, building on top of £840 million previously pledged for West Coast Main Line infrastructure. Ministers also promised timetable overhauls aimed at improving reliability and speed for journeys centered around Manchester.
London Euston station is slated for a £50 million upgrade package, which includes £11 million earmarked specifically for extra seating, modernized waiting areas, and improved restrooms. Additional stations along the corridor will receive £10 million in funding by the end of 2027 to upgrade passenger facilities and onboard WiFi connectivity.
Transitioning Operations Under Great British Railways
Avanti West Coast marks the latest rail firm brought back under public control as part of a broader government strategy preceding the establishment of Great British Railways. Great Western Railway is scheduled to transition in December, while operators like LNER, Northern, Southeastern, and TransPennine Express have already been nationalised.

“Over the coming months, we’ll work closely with the government to ensure a seamless transition into public ownership while remaining focused on delivering for our customers and communities.”

Mr Mellors also pointed to fleet modernization efforts completed during the private tenure, highlighting the refurbishment of the Pendolino fleet and the introduction of new Evero trains.
