Bungie Delays Marathon Update To December And Drops Seasonal Model

Bungie has announced it is moving away from a strict seasonal schedule for its sci-fi extraction shooter, Marathon. The studio revealed on September 14 that a major update originally planned for September 22 has been delayed until December 8.

According to Bungie, the shift in delivery is a response to player feedback indicating the game needs better progression, more variety and greater depth to encourage long-term play. The studio stated that addressing these concerns requires us to change both what we’re building and how we deliver it, opting for more flexibility to test and improve features rather than adhering to fixed seasonal deadlines.

October Progression Reset and Nightfall Refresh

Before the major December release, Bungie will launch a smaller, focused update on October 6 known as the Nightfall refresh. This update is intended to provide all players with a fresh starting point by resetting the in-game economy and player progression.

Bungie noted that this reset is necessary because previous seasonal issues accelerated some players into the endgame while leaving others behind, which hindered engagement with the Extraction mode and prevented previous resets from functioning as intended. The October 6 update will also include:

  • A new reward pass
  • The limited-time return of the Vault Breaker PvE mode
  • Quality-of-life improvements, live tuning, and balance changes

The studio plans to use the period between October and December to run gameplay experiments and share findings with the community.

The Symbiosis Update and PvE Focus

The delayed major content, now titled the Symbiosis update, will arrive on December 8. This update is designed to transition Marathon into a more alien and dynamic survival experience. A primary feature of the update is the introduction of the game’s first dedicated PvE mode, which will be made a permanent part of the experience.

  • A new social space featuring a firing range
  • An experimental PvP Team Deathmatch (TDM) mode
  • Improvements to the onboarding process for new players

Studio Struggles and Market Pressure

These changes come as Bungie faces significant challenges. Steam concurrent player numbers for Marathon have continued to decline throughout the summer. The studio also underwent mass layoffs earlier this summer, affecting some personnel working on Marathon and developers working on Destiny 2.

The shift in direction follows a controversial decision by Bungie to end support for Destiny 2 to prioritize Marathon. The studio currently has no other projects in active, full-blown production. Furthermore, the December 8 update will launch shortly after the release of Grand Theft Auto 6 and approximately two months after Modern Warfare 4, which includes an extraction component called DMZ.

Bungie communications lead Dylan Gafner indicated that players can expect more communication from the team in the coming weeks and months. The studio also plans to release a blog post later in September detailing future evolution plans for the title.
