Five baby orangutans discovered in an Odisha forest have triggered an inter-state trafficking investigation spanning West Bengal, sea routes, and suspected road corridors. Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi ordered a comprehensive probe, while wildlife officials monitor the young apes in quarantine at Nandankanan Zoo.
An unusual wildlife recovery in India’s eastern coastal belt has opened an expansive investigation into international animal smuggling networks. The discovery of five juvenile orangutans in a forest clearing has forced law enforcement agencies to re-examine regional transit routes and security protocols, as investigators trace how non-native apes crossed international borders.
Discovery in Balasore and the Nandankanan Zoo Quarantine
On Tuesday, September 8, authorities found five young orangutans in a casuarina plantation within the Bichitrapur Badapahi forest area of Odisha’s Balasore district, according to NDTV. Because orangutans are native to tropical rainforests in Southeast Asian countries like Indonesia and Malaysia, their sudden appearance in an Indian forest immediately signaled an illegal trafficking operation.
Four of the rescued animals are approximately six months old, while the fifth is around a year old. Zoo veterinarians and keepers have worked to stabilize the animals in a quarantined enclosure.
Zoo officials implemented specialized care routines to ease the trauma of the ordeal. Caretakers fed the young apes mashed apples while playing classical music in the background to lower stress levels.
Pradeep Mirase, deputy director of Nandankanan Zoo, noted that the baby orangutans continue to remain healthy and playful in their quarantined enclosure.
While one of the young orangutans developed a fever, keepers confirmed the temperature had subsided.
Investigating the Smuggling Corridor from Digha to Kolkata
The investigation quickly moved beyond Odisha’s borders. The Special Task Force (STF), led by Deputy Inspector General Kanwar Vishal Singh, analyzed recordings from at least 46 security cameras along main routes stretching from Chandaneswar and Udaypur toward Digha in West Bengal, continuing onward in the direction of Kolkata.
Investigators also scrutinized footage from railway stations and airports. While initial inquiries explored possible maritime entry through sea routes, investigators found no significant leads there, prompting a shift in focus to terrestrial roadways. Police believe the traffickers purposefully avoided major national highways, opting instead for village roads to dodge closed-circuit television cameras and law enforcement detection.
A Mahindra Thar SUV emerged as a primary focus for the STF. Authorities analyzed vehicle movement records and shortlisted several mobile numbers active along the suspected transit corridor near the Balasore forest site. Regional Chief Conservator of Forests Prakash Chand Gogineni indicated that Odisha served merely as a transit corridor rather than a hub of local trafficking involvement, pointing instead to a botched transfer.
Government Response and International Implications
Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, currently on a business tour of the UAE, ordered a comprehensive multi-agency investigation. In a formal statement issued by the Chief Minister’s Office, Majhi declared that the state will never be allowed to serve as a transit route for the illegal trafficking of exotic wildlife

The Chief Minister instructed state law enforcement to coordinate closely with the federal government, the Wildlife Crime Control Bureau, and other wildlife enforcement agencies. The directive mandates that investigators identify the entry point into India, trace the transport route, determine who carried out the movement, and establish the ultimate destination.
The case has drawn attention to India’s commitment to wildlife laws and the prevention of illegal wildlife trade.
Unlike typical trafficking seizures where animals are intercepted inside vehicles, private homes, or luggage at airports, this case stands apart because all five infant apes were found together, uncaged, and healthy. Investigators suspect the courier abandoned the animals deliberately to ensure they were spotted after a transit operation broke down.
