The 21st annual Culture Night brought hundreds of events to communities across the country, showcasing arts, heritage, and culture through free public activities, according to RTÉ. The national celebration, organized by the Arts Council and local authorities, drew over one million participants in the previous year, The Journal reports. While traditional offerings usually run during the evening and night, this year’s schedule featured a number of activities starting earlier in the day, according to KCLR 96FM.
Culture Night Marks 21st Year With Nationwide Events
North East Highlights Across Meath, Monaghan, and Cavan
More than 100 events were scheduled across the north east region. In County Meath, art enthusiasts visited the Solstice Arts Centre in Navan to view an exhibition titled The First Frontier Was the Horizon, which featured work from 19 local artists for the centre’s 20th anniversary. Kennedy Plaza hosted music and entertainment from the Irish National Foresters Brass Band, while the Swift Cultural Centre in Trim held free screenings of the movies Flow and An Cailín Ciúin. Additional Meath programming included a cultural diversity celebration by the Cultúr Migrant Centre and storytelling at Bective Bridge.
In County Monaghan, festivities featured a tribute titled Big Tom: Memories that Never Die at the Oram Community Centre, marking what would have been the 90th birthday of country music star Big Tom McBride. The event included archive footage, photographs, and a performance by the late singer’s grand-nephew, Damien Davis. In Castleblayney, local artist and flax artisan Úna Curley gave a hands-on flax-making demonstration at the Íontas Community Centre. Meanwhile, Monaghan singer-songwriter Ryan Sheridan performed at St Peter’s Tin Church in Laragh as part of Pop-up Scenic Sessions, a collaboration between Monaghan Tourism and Creative Monaghan. The Monaghan Peace Campus also hosted a bilingual workshop with Hannah Nic Eindrí, helping participants translate their favourite songs into Irish.
Kerry Events Span From Astronomy to Beach Discos
County Kerry hosted 69 free events for the national celebration, according to Radio Kerry. Kate Kennelly, Kerry County Council’s Arts Officer, noted that the lineup featured activities ranging from astronomy and beach discos to musicals and dreamcatcher workshops. Venues stretched across the county, including Listowel and Ballybunion in the north, Tureencahill in the east, Dingle and Cloghane in the west, Tralee, Castlemaine, Killorglin, and Killarney, as well as numerous locations along the Iveragh peninsula such as Valentia, Ballinskelligs, Derrynane, Kenmare, Portmagee, Cahersiveen, and Dromid.
Carlow and Kilkenny Programming Highlights Traveller Culture
Carlow featured local activities including 250th-anniversary events for the Church of the Holy Cross in Myshall alongside African storytelling. In Kilkenny, the Kilkenny Traveller Community Movement participated in its first ‘Culture Dolomi’ event in collaboration with actress and singer Susie Lamb and the Watergate Theatre. The programme included music by Caitlin Donovan, a poetry reading in Cant by Polly Connors from the Carlow Travellers Forum, the launch of a short film titled Who Are We Now, and a question-and-answer session moderated by Susie Lamb and Star Stokes.
