Federal health authorities reported Thursday that parasitic illness cases linked to iceberg lettuce have crossed into 20 states, expanding the scope of the largest outbreak of its kind in the U.S. According to the Food and Drug Administration, three new states—Georgia, Tennessee, and Texas—joined the affected list as the nationwide case tally climbed to 11,458 people sickened, up from roughly 10,900 the prior week.
Taylor Farms Supply Chain and the Central Mexico Investigation
Investigators from the FDA, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and state agencies have focused their traceback efforts on lettuce grown at a farm in central Mexico operated by Taylor Farms. The company voluntarily pulled all iceberg lettuce sourced from central Mexico off the U.S. market, issuing a formal recall on July 17.
The recall impacted Marketside-brand items sold at Walmart, including 12-ounce and 24-ounce iceberg salad bags and 8-ounce and 16-ounce shredded lettuce packages with best-by dates ranging from July 18 through August 3. Food-service distribution was also hit hard; Taco Bell stopped using lettuce sourced from the facility as of July 17. FDA personnel continue to inspect and sample produce at the Mexican growing and processing operations alongside Mexican government officials.
Comparing Scale: Versus Past Infection Totals
The current outbreak dwarfs historical precedent for cyclosporiasis in the United States. Previously, the worst year in the U.S. for infections was 2019, which saw roughly 4,700 illnesses reported nationally. By contrast, the CDC reported earlier this week that the U.S. has recorded about 29,000 confirmed or suspected cases across all sources so far this year, with 922 hospitalizations.
For this specific Taylor Farms-linked outbreak, federal data shows 495 people hospitalized, with two deaths reported in Michigan. The most recent reported illness onset linked to the outbreak occurred on August 15, though health officials note that the vast majority of infections began before the mid-July recall announcement.
Understanding the Parasite and Public Health Guidance
Cyclospora is a microscopic, heat-loving parasite that infects the intestines and spreads via fecal contamination. Outbreaks typically peak in late spring and summer. The CDC notes that the resulting illness commonly causes watery diarrhea with frequent and sometimes explosive bowel movements.
Cyclosporiasis occurs less frequently than infections from other foodborne pathogens like Salmonella and E. coli, and many cases are never traced to a definitive food source.
Federal health agencies advise consumers who purchased food containing the recalled lettuce to thoroughly clean and sanitize all touched surfaces and containers. Anyone experiencing symptoms—particularly individuals who consumed shredded iceberg lettuce within the preceding two weeks—is urged to contact a health care provider.
Despite the expanding geographic distribution of confirmed cases, the FDA stated that it remains confident that all recalled iceberg lettuce related to this specific cyclospora outbreak is off the market.
