The semifinal heat at the European Athletics Championships took a sharp turn for the German contingent when Franziska Schuster crashed out of contention in the 100-meter hurdles semifinal. The national champion over the distance struggled out of the starting blocks, failing to find her usual pacing during the race.

As she attempted to make up ground through the middle stretch, a minor contact with her trailing leg at the sixth hurdle sparked a chain reaction of errors. She caught her right leg squarely on the seventh hurdle, stumbled, and knuckled over on her right foot before crashing headfirst into the eighth barrier at full speed.

The heavy collision sent an audible murmur through the stadium crowd in Birmingham. Broadcasting live for ZDF, commentator Marc Windgassen noted the severity of the incident on air, remarking that athletes have virtually no recovery chance once a trailing leg catches a hurdle.

Despite the frightening nature of the impact, Schuster managed to stand up quickly and avoided severe physical damage. Speaking to reporters shortly afterward, she admitted that the chaotic sequence left her momentarily stunned.

In English translation, the 24-year-old explained that she felt largely okay physically though she expected soreness the following day, noting that her foot gave out and she landed directly on her face. In a separate interview with ZDF, she expressed deeper disbelief over the outcome of the race.

German Team Exit and a Dramatic Photo Finish

Schuster’s elimination marked the end of the road for the German trio in the event. Team members Rosina Schneider and Lia Flotow also failed to advance past the semifinal round in Birmingham.

Schneider finished third in her semifinal heat with a time of 12.96 seconds, missing qualification for the final by a narrow margin of three hundredths of a second and taking tenth place overall. Flotow crossed the line in her heat with a time of 13.02 seconds, securing twelfth place.

The European title ultimately was decided by a photo finish in the final. Netherlands competitor Nadine Visser edged out Poland’s Pia Skrzyszowska—who previously won the 2022 title in Munich—with both athletes clocking identical times of 12.67 seconds, though Visser crossed one thousandth of a second faster. France’s Laeticia Bapté captured the bronze medal in 12.73 seconds.

Merlin Hummel Claims Silver in the Hammer Throw

While the hurdles event brought disappointment for the women’s team, Tuesday evening delivered a successful result for the German men’s delegation in the field events. Hammer thrower Merlin Hummel secured a runner-up finish to replicate his podium performance from the previous year.

The 24-year-old athlete launched the hammer out to an 81.30-meter distance during his penultimate attempt in the competition. The mark safely secured the silver medal, mirroring his second-place finish at the World Championships.
