Thousands of Auckland properties lost internet connectivity early Tuesday after a Chorus outage disrupted broadband services across the North Shore, Hibiscus Coast, and Papatoetoe. Telecommunications infrastructure company Chorus confirmed the disruption followed a planned overnight network update that encountered configuration issues.
Overnight Network Update Triggers Wide Auckland Outages
An overnight network update carried out by telecommunications infrastructure company Chorus triggered widespread internet disruptions across Auckland on Tuesday morning. Up to 30,000 internet connections were cut in different parts of the city, with reports on the North Shore, the Hibiscus Coast, and Papatoetoe, according to reporting from RNZ.
Monitoring data from Downdetector showed a spike in outage reports shortly before 9 a.m. Users across multiple retail providers—including Spark, One NZ, 2degrees, and Slingshot—lost connectivity. Chorus maps highlighted outages clustered across several Auckland suburbs, including Albany, Redvale, Long Bay, Rosedale, Browns Bay, and Milford.
Technical Failures During Rollback Work
The disruption began just before 4:30 a.m. when properties were hit by what infrastructure operators identified as a configuration issue
according to 1News. Chorus explained that the issue was a “result of a non-impacting planned network change that was carried out in the early hours of this morning, the network change was then rolled back due to issues that were being experienced”.
Chorus noted that some of the config details that direct the flow internet traffic between have not been reinstated
as reported by 1News, which was causing the loss of service to large portion services.
Restoration Progress and Retailer Response
Remedial work proceeded throughout the morning hours. By midday on Tuesday, a Chorus spokesperson confirmed that the network outages had been resolved and customers should be reconnected shortly.

Major retail service providers also updated their customer bases as services flickered back online. One New Zealand confirmed via its website that service has now been fully restored for our fibre broadband customers, while offering apologies for the morning disruption and noting that Chorus was investigating the root cause.
