HoverAir Versa Modular Design Bypasses FCC Foreign Drone Ban

HoverAir has secured FCC certification for its modular Versa vlogging camera and drone in the USA, bypassing foreign drone restrictions through a detachable flight accessory that carries no RF transmitters. The hybrid device launches on Indiegogo starting at $449 following its teaser announcement on July 30, 2026.

When the regulatory agency placed newly introduced foreign drones on its Covered List last December, Zero Zero Robotics imprint HoverAir faced significant hurdles in the American market following the fallout from the agency’s foreign drone ban. The company’s waterproof Aqua drone, which debuted on Indiegogo last year, never reached United States buyers because of these restrictions. But the company has engineered a structural workaround for its latest hybrid hardware.

Modular Design Method Clears Regulatory Hurdles for the Versa

The Versa functions primarily as a handheld vlogging camera bearing a candy-bar shape and a three-axis stabilized camera, sharing a physical form factor with devices like the DJI Osmo Pocket 3. Yet its core innovation lies in a modular assembly that snaps into a set of propellers and converts into a selfie drone. This piecemeal architecture is precisely what allowed the device to navigate strict federal oversight.

That certification marks the first time a consumer quadcopter has earned approval since the agency instituted its restrictions last year. Company representatives explained to reporting outlets that the physical separation of the flight components from radio transmitters was central to the clearance.

“The Flight Kit is an accessory designed to extend the HoverAir Versa’s capabilities, but because it contains no RF transmitters, it does not require a separate FCC ID or individual listing in the FCC database.”

Because the flight carrier communicates with and draws power from the main camera module via magnetic connections and tiny pogo pins, the propellers avoid the FCC’s scrutiny while the camera module and remote control appear in regulatory databases.

Handheld Vlogging Camera Meets Autonomous Flight Technology

In handheld mode, the device operates as a traditional pocket camera equipped with mechanical gimbal stabilization, a built-in display, joystick controls, and an industry-leading processor designed to enhance low-light performance and dynamic range. When users slide the device onto the caged drone carrier and unfold the arms, it transforms into an autonomous flying platform that requires no controller and no piloting skills.

The flight software incorporates artificial intelligence for subject tracking and framing, alongside more than ten intelligent flight modes tailored for content creators. Among these is a feature named 3D Worlds, which flies an autonomous 360-degree path around a target scene and reconstructs an interactive three-dimensional capture without utilizing LiDAR.

Optics and imaging specifications include a Type 1/1.3 image sensor capable of recording stabilized video at up to 4K60 alongside an OLED touch screen. However, technical analysts have expressed reservations regarding manufacturer claims that the camera captures footage with up to 17.5 stops of dynamic range, noting that such figures would exceed current market standards including competing hardware like the DJI Osmo Pocket 4P.

Indiegogo Crowdfunding Campaign Structure and Pricing Tiers

The crowdfunded rollout carries tiered pricing structures depending on the selected accessory bundle and purchase window. Early backers can secure individual units during the initial campaign launch.

HoverAir VERSA Announced: A Pocket Camera That Converts Into A Drone!
Package Tier Early Bird Price Subsequent Price
Camera Only $449 $499 (after Thursday)
FlyMore Combo (Includes Flight Kit) $629 $887
Creator Combo (Includes Extra Batteries & Accessories) $799 $1,270

Beyond purchasing costs, regulatory compliance for pilots depends on total assembled weight. When fully built for flight, the device weighs 230g, keeping it light enough to avoid Federal Aviation Administration registration and Remote ID mandates for recreational fliers. Commercial operators, however, must still attach an external Remote ID transmitter sold separately.
