Apple is developing a photo provenance system called Apple Reference Image designed to verify whether an image was captured using a physical iPhone camera, according to code found in MacRumors. The feature surfaced within a privacy disclosure included in iOS 27 beta 5, as reported by Engadget.

How the Verification and Private Cloud Compute Process Works

Photos taken in Reference Mode are not automatically authenticated upon capture. Instead, users have the option to trigger authentication by tapping a Reference badge on the image, as detailed by Lowyat.net.

Tapping the badge initiates a verification process that transmits specific data to Apple’s Private Cloud Compute (PCC) servers. The transmitted information includes:

  • The raw image
  • Sensor signatures
  • Capture time frame
  • Unique hardware identifiers of the sensor
  • Selected sensor information and metadata

Upon receiving the data, the Private Cloud Compute servers evaluate whether the camera sensor captured the photo, assign it a unique ID, and return an authenticated version to the user’s device. Apple’s system is designed so that the servers never receive the raw photo itself; instead, the company receives only sensor data, a hash, and the assessment results. Furthermore, Apple retains the ability to refuse authentication for images originating from a sensor that may be compromised, and it can retroactively invalidate a sensor’s past authentications.
