Edward Jacob Lang, better known as Jake Lang, announced his return to the city on July 24, promoting what he described on social media as a peaceful freedom of speech rally.

When Lang arrived just before noon alongside six other individuals in two vehicles, the situation escalated rapidly. According to Minneapolis police, both vehicles abruptly drove onto the sidewalk adjacent to City Hall and traveled slowly through the crowd.

Interim Police Chief Bill Peterson noted that a chemical irritant believed to be mace was deployed by individuals on both sides during the immediate confrontation. Officers moved in to clear a path and de-escalate the situation, allowing the vehicles to leave the immediate area. During the scramble, three police officers sustained non-life-threatening injuries, and one officer was briefly hospitalized before being released.

Coordinated Traffic Stops Yield Probable Cause Riot Charges

Law enforcement agencies intercepted both vehicles away from City Hall. The Minnesota State Patrol pulled over the first vehicle near Washington Avenue and southbound Interstate 35W, arresting Eric Wayne Dawson, Stephen Edward Major, and Matthew Pike Oduguwa, KSTP reported. Bloomington Police pulled over the second vehicle near Lindau Lane and IKEA Way, taking into custody Charles Oscar Miles Jr., John William-Kei Irwin, Jayden Daniel Scott, and Jake Lang.

All detained occupants across both vehicles were arrested for probable cause riot, and both vehicles were impounded. Police noted that both Lang and Oduguwa were temporarily transported to hospitals for medical evaluations regarding non-arrest-related conditions before being booked into the Hennepin County Jail.

Community Anger and Official Condemnation Follow the Clashes

The police department’s handling of the caravan drew sharp criticism from community organizers on the ground. Jay Yates, an organizer with the Freedom Road Socialist Organization, condemned the police response, questioning why officers shielded the vehicles after they drove onto the sidewalk.

“MPD told us that we couldn’t have our vehicles on the street and then let Jake Lang drive up here in a truck on the sidewalk, protecting him from the crowd?”

In response, Chief Peterson explained that making arrests inside the dense, volatile crowd would have created greater safety risks, making a controlled departure the safest option to de-escalate immediate danger. Mayor Frey condemned Lang’s actions during the press conference while emphasizing the city’s commitment to upholding constitutional rights even when speech is abhorrent.
