The transaction brings an end to a contract impasse between Marchenko and the Columbus front office, which began when the forward’s camp indicated before the June draft that he did not intend to sign a long-term extension with the franchise.
Columbus general manager Don Waddell moved swiftly to secure a return for a player scheduled for restricted free agency after the upcoming season. Rather than lose Marchenko without a long-term commitment, the Blue Jackets acquired a package headlined by 23-year-old power forward Matthew Knies, alongside defenseman Emil Andrae, center Steven Lorentz, and a conditional 2027 second-round draft pick originally belonging to the Seattle Kraken.
Toronto Secures Marchenko With a Six-Year Extension
The Maple Leafs immediately locked up their new offensive weapon. Alongside the trade, Marchenko agreed to a long-term deal carrying a reported six-year, $75 million value. The extension averages $12.5 million annually, keeping the 26-year-old Russian winger in Toronto.
The Maple Leafs pursued the deal aggressively despite previous indications that the acquisition cost might prove too steep. League insiders reported significant rival interest in Marchenko before the trade call, with clubs including the Montreal Canadiens, New York Islanders, Boston, Vegas, and Seattle examining potential packages.

The Return Package Heading to Columbus
For the Blue Jackets, the centerpiece of the return is Matthew Knies, a physical forward who spent his first three NHL seasons with Toronto. Waddell praised the incoming player’s physical profile and grit as a fit for the team’s forward corps.
Knies tallied a career-best 66 points on 23 goals and 43 assists through 79 games in the 2025-26 campaign, logging an average of 18:48 in ice time. He is expected to slot into one of the top two scoring lines alongside newly re-signed center Adam Fantilli.
