Isaacman left the briefing room briefly and returned with the president on the line via speakerphone to congratulate the agency on the successful liftoff of the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope.

The call stood in sharp contrast to the administration’s repeated attempts to scrap the observatory during previous budget cycles. The Roman mission, originally built around a 7.9-foot-wide mirror donated by the National Reconnaissance Office after a classified spy satellite program was canceled, survived multiple termination efforts over several years.

Budget Battles and Prior Cancellation Attempts

Before reaching the launch pad on August 30, 2026, the $4.3 billion telescope faced an uncertain future under the White House.

The threats continued into 2025. In April of that year, the White House Office of Management and Budget proposed cutting NASA’s science program in half and canceling at least 41 missions, which would have fully terminated the Roman telescope while it was nearly fully assembled. When the official skinny budget arrived later, the administration allocated $156.6 million to the project’s continued development in 2026—less than half of what it received in 2025. Those proposed cuts were ultimately averted in Congress.

Despite that history, the president struck a celebratory tone during Sunday’s call, praising the agency’s success and pointing to his own visits to space facilities, including a Friday trip to the Johnson Space Center in Houston where he awarded the Artemis 2 crew the Congressional Space Medal of Honor. Asked about the call, Jared Isaacman expressed gratitude for the policy and resources, interpreting the remarks as a sign of potential future support for science missions.

Carried aloft by a triple-core SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket at 7:26 a.m. EDT from the Kennedy Space Center, the 42-foot-long, 18,000-pound observatory is traveling to Lagrange Point No. 2 (L2). Located about a million miles on the opposite side of Earth from the Sun, L2 provides a gravitational vantage point where the James Webb Space Telescope is also stationed.

Named after Nancy Grace Roman, NASA’s first chief astronomer who championed space telescopes and earned the moniker the mother of Hubble, the new observatory features a 300-megapixel wide-field camera designed to survey the cosmos at unprecedented speeds.

“The speed at which we’ll be scanning the sky, delivering vast amounts of data and returning results will be at an unprecedented rate, never done before.”

Officials note that a single full-resolution image from the telescope covers 45 city blocks or the entirety of El Capitan in Yosemite National Park. While Hubble has returned about 172 terabytes of data over 30 years, Roman is expected to downlink 2,500 terabytes during its five-year primary mission, scanning broad swaths of the sky 1,000 times faster than its predecessor.

The telescope may also help resolve the Hubble Tension—a persistent scientific puzzle involving conflicting measurements of the universe’s expansion rate. While probes studying the afterglow of the Big Bang measure one value for the Hubble Constant, Hubble observations of supernovas indicate a slightly different number.
