How Nottingham’s Rapid Genomic Test Delivers Results During Surgery
Created through a collaboration between Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust and the University of Nottingham, the technology analyzes the DNA of a tumour sample taken during a biopsy or operation. Initial results reach the surgical team in less than two hours, while the patient is still on the operating table.
This immediate genetic insight gives neurosurgeons critical information while procedures are underway.
Expanding Access Across Specialist NHS Centres in England
NHS England is investing more than £2 million over two years in the Brain Cancer NHS Genomic Network of Excellence as the NHS pilot initially takes the technology into five specialist centres before expanding further across England, building on pilot work in Nottingham and Birmingham.

Approximately 13,000 people receive a primary brain tumour diagnosis each year in the UK. Because the disease encompasses more than 100 distinct types ranging from slow-growing conditions to aggressive cancers, identifying the exact molecular profile quickly is essential for planning care.
For patients facing a potential cancer diagnosis, reducing turnaround times removes an immense psychological burden. Professor Frankie Swords, NHS England’s medical director, noted that the technology represents a major leap forward for patients. Health and Social Care Secretary Yvette Cooper added in statements published by NHS England that the breakthrough provides vital genetic information to surgeons within a matter of hours or days while serving as a tribute to the UK’s life sciences sector.

Patients who have experienced the technology firsthand emphasize the relief it provides. Steve Palmer, a 55-year-old Nottingham resident diagnosed with a grade 4 glioblastoma after collapsing at the gym, noted that the rapid answers allowed him to focus immediately on treatment.
Steve Palmer said that getting that definite result quickly took away what could have been weeks of anxiety, adding that he had the surgery and just wanted to get on to the next phase of treatment and recovery, and get on with fighting whatever he’s got to fight.
Beyond reducing distress, faster genetic profiling helps clinicians establish targeted treatment plans sooner and assists patients in enrolling on clinical trials that require specific molecular characteristics before participation.
