Indonesia is battling severe wildfires driven by a strong El Niño pattern and intentional land-clearing fires. The blazes have burned over 202,000 hectares, threatened critical orangutan research camps in Borneo, forced wildlife into human settlements, and left dozens of endangered primates rescued or displaced by September.
Wildfires sweeping across Indonesian Borneo and West Kalimantan have ignited a severe ecological crisis, forcing critically endangered Bornean orangutans out of their fragmenting forest homes and threatening world-class scientific research stations. Driven by an exceptionally strong El Niño weather pattern and traditional dry-season land clearing, the fires have ravaged hundreds of thousands of hectares, generated hazardous regional haze, and driven desperate wildlife into nearby human plantations.
Research Stations Under Threat in Gunung Palung National Park
In the heart of West Kalimantan, the fires have surged dangerously close to Rangkong research station, a vital satellite of the Cabang Panti research station situated about four miles north in Gunung Palung National Park. Flames burned within 200 meters of the station, threatening a site that hosts one of the longest-running continuous studies of wild apes in the world. More than 2,500 orangutans inhabit the park.
Scientists warn that losing these uninterrupted field observations would erase decades of foundational research. Studies at the site established that Bornean orangutans have a reproduction cycle where females give birth only once every eight years, representing the longest interbirth interval of any mammal.

To stave off the encroaching inferno, a desperate team of more than 40 field assistants, staff, and local villagers constructed a firebreak and deployed an improvised sprinkler system using a punctured hose line. The makeshift rig saturates the surrounding peat, a crucial defense because peat fires can smolder underground for months after surface flames die out. Despite these local efforts, conservation leaders emphasize that the crisis has far outstripped community resources.
Escalating Wildlife Rescues and Human-Wildlife Conflict
Beyond the research camps, the fires are actively driving animals toward human settlements. Forestry authorities and wildlife rescue organizations confirmed that six more orangutans, including two nursing infants, were rescued from rural plantations in West Kalimantan over the first week of September. These operations brought the total number of recorded orangutan rescues in the region to 15 within a single month, while broader conservation efforts in West Kalimantan have taken in 18 animals.

Rescuers noted that leaping flames and thick smoke cut off natural forest corridors, trapping the apes in agricultural zones where they faced heightened risks of starvation, injury, and direct conflict with villagers. Field teams carefully anesthetized the trapped primates to minimize stress before transporting them to rehabilitation centers, such as the YIARI facility in Ketapang, for medical monitoring and eventual release when habitat conditions stabilize.
Nationwide Devastation and Regional Haze Emergency
The scale of the agricultural burning extends far beyond local forest blocks. Government figures show that more than 202,000 hectares of land burned nationwide between January and July, while independent satellite tracking from the Nusantara Atlas project estimated total burned areas approaching nearly 895,657 hectares by mid-September when including August spikes. The European Union’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service reported that haze emissions from the August fires were the worst recorded for that month in 24 years, sending dense smoke across borders into Malaysia and Singapore.

The Indonesian government deployed approximately 43,000 firefighters to combat the blazes, backed by specialized water-bombing assets. A Japanese navy ship delivered three helicopters to West Kalimantan to bolster aerial suppression efforts in remote swamp and plantation zones. Meanwhile, Greenpeace estimates indicate that toxic particulate matter has exposed roughly 35 million people across Indonesia to hazardous air quality.
Outlook for the Dry Season and Fragile Ecosystems
Meteorological agencies project that intense dry conditions and the strengthening El Niño cycle will persist through October, keeping fire danger exceptionally high across Sumatra and Borneo. Conservationists emphasize that saving research buildings or plucking individual apes from plantations addresses only the immediate emergency.
