Clancy recalled returning home from running errands to find Lindsay severely injured in the backyard after jumping from an upstairs window in a suicide attempt, according to NBC News. Upon entering the basement, he discovered his children with exercise bands around their necks. While Cora and Dawson were dead, his youngest son, Callan, was airlifted to Boston Children’s Hospital. Clancy held onto hope, recalling that he thought, Just give me one. Just give me one kid, and I would raise him as best I could.
Callan’s heart kept beating for four days, and he ultimately passed away in his father’s arms.
The Trial and Postpartum Psychosis Debate
The high-profile murder trial of Lindsay Clancy put a national spotlight on maternal mental health and the legal definition of criminal responsibility. During the CBS News segment, Patrick Clancy testified that Lindsay’s mental state had deteriorated despite psychiatric visits, medication changes, and a brief hospitalization for postpartum depression. Earlier on the day of the killings, he noted, she had appeared to be having one of her best days.
The legal proceedings ended in a mistrial on Sept. 4 after a jury deadlocked 11-1. The majority of jurors were prepared to clear Lindsay Clancy of criminal responsibility due to postpartum psychosis, while a lone juror sided with prosecutors who argued she knew what she was doing. The immense pressure of the tragedy and subsequent trial took a severe toll on Clancy’s mental health. He shared that he battled suicidal thoughts and experienced a panic attack during his trial testimony when attorneys played the harrowing 911 call in which he screamed and cried after finding his children. Clancy said, noting he was now 36 years old.
In the wake of the trial, Clancy and his second wife, Dr. Rachel Danis, became targets of intense public scrutiny, facing unfounded online conspiracy theories and speculation on social media. Addressing these rumors, Clancy said, It’s deeply harmful to the legacy of my children. It is a huge distraction from what really matters here, which is perinatal mental health.
