Space exploration rarely involves cartoon mascots, but a stuffed Pikachu made an orbital journey of 67 days on the International Space Station between April 11 and June 17, 2026.
The flight serves as the anchor for an official partnership between the European Space Agency and The Pokémon Company International, timed to align with World Space Week, scheduled for October 4 through October 10, 2026.
Exhibitions and Museum Tours Across Europe
The partnership brings science and media together through a traveling exhibition visiting science museums and ESA facilities across several countries. The educational display combines real data regarding Europe’s space missions with select Pokémon characters integrated into informational panels.
The exhibition debuts during open house events hosted at ESA facilities in Paris, Roma, Noordwijk, Darmstadt, Villanueva de la Cañada, and Harwell.

Josef Aschbacher, Director General of the European Space Agency, stated that inspiring future generations is a key part of the ESA mission, adding that through this collaboration with Pokémon, they are creating new ways for people across all of Europe to connect with space.
From the corporate side, Mathieu Galante, senior licensing director for The Pokémon Company International, stated that the alliance opens a new frontier for fans by bringing together the world of Pokémon and the fascination for space across different venues in Europe.
In-Game Activations and Timed Research
Beyond physical museums, the collaboration extends directly into the mobile game Pokémon GO. Running from October 4, 2026, to April 30, 2027, the digital event features an astronaut Pikachu appearing in one-star raids at six participating museums, including the Science Museum of London, the Cité de l’espace in Toulouse, and Space Expo in Noordwijk.
Players who successfully defeat the raid boss gain an encounter with the character, complete with a commemorative location background and a chance to capture a shiny variant. Timed research runs across the entire promotional window, while field research tasks stay restricted to the October 4–10 World Space Week window.
During that initial week, space-themed species—including Pikachu, Clefairy, Magnemite, Starmie, Lunatone, Solrock, Elgyem, and Blipbug—spawn with increased frequency near participating museum venues. Shiny variants will be available for all listed species except Blipbug.
Precedents in Orbital Pop Culture
While the 2026 flight marks a physical milestone for the franchise, it follows a prior digital crossover. In 2020, players of Pokémon Sword and Shield received a complimentary Pikachu named Kibo, a direct nod to the Kibō module aboard the International Space Station.
The European Space Agency itself operates as an intergovernmental organization established in 1975, currently uniting 23 member states—including France, Germany, Italy, and Spain—to coordinate continental aerospace capabilities and public space investments.
