Rupert Grint Will Join Harry Potter Again, This Time on Broadway

More than a decade after the release of the final film in the franchise, another original cast member is stepping back into the magical world. Rupert Grint will make his return to the stage in New York City, taking over the role of the adult Ron Weasley in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. His run is scheduled to begin on February 2, 2027, and continue through May 30, 2027.

Stepping Back into Ron Weasley’s Shoes

Grint was only 11 years old when he was originally cast as Ron Weasley in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, a part he played across all eight films until the series concluded with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 in 2011. Now 38 years old, Grint joins a stage production written by Jack Thorne, John Tiffany, and J.K. Rowling that is set 19 years after the events of the final novel, portraying an older Ron who is both a husband and a father.

The engagement marks Grint’s return to Broadway for the first time since his debut in the 2014 production of It’s Only a Play at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre. He has also performed on the West End, making his stage debut in Jez Butterworth’s play Mojo. Outside of his theatrical work, Grint’s recent screen credits include M. Night Shyamalan’s Apple TV+ series Servant, the feature film Knock at the Cabin, and the horror feature Nightborn.

Following Tom Felton Into the Lyric Theatre Cast

Grint is the second actor from the original film franchise to join the cast of the Broadway production. He follows Tom Felton, who originated the role of Draco Malfoy in the films and became the first movie cast member to join the stage production anywhere in the world when he began performances in November 2025.

Felton’s ongoing run at the Lyric Theatre is scheduled to conclude on January 3, 2027, creating a continuous bridge of original film talent as Grint takes over the stage shortly after Felton’s departure. While both actors appear in the play, Grint and Felton will not share the stage simultaneously during their respective limited engagements.

Box Office Impact of Original Film Cast Members

The addition of film franchise alumni to the stage production arrives during a period of historic financial performance for the New York staging. According to BroadwayWorld, the show averaged roughly $1.07 million a week and played to about 84 percent capacity in the ten weeks prior to Felton’s arrival. Following his debut, weekly grosses surged, peaking at $3,709,875 across nine performances during the week ending December 28, 2025.

Data tracking across Felton’s performances highlights a measurable audience draw tied directly to the film stars. In weeks when Felton performed, capacity figures routinely hovered near 100 percent, whereas scheduled absences resulted in immediate attendance dips. Producers Sonia Friedman and Colin Callender noted that Grint’s casting extends this connection between the original films and the theatrical narrative.

Grint’s 17-week engagement will run alongside the current Broadway cast, which features John Skelley as Harry Potter and Trish Lindstrom as Ginny Potter, with Daniel Fredrick currently performing as Ron Weasley ahead of Grint’s arrival in February.
