Samsung has secured US Food and Drug Administration clearance for a new hearing aid feature and self-administered hearing test coming to Galaxy Buds 3 Pro and Galaxy Buds 4 Pro earbuds in the fourth quarter of 2026 for users with mild to moderate hearing loss.
Earbud microphones have long served as rudimentary sound amplifiers, but regulatory clearance marks a formal step into medical-grade territory. Samsung announced that its newly cleared tools are designed to provide an over-the-counter hearing aid solution for adults aged 18 and older experiencing mild to moderate hearing loss, according to Engadget’s reporting.
The upcoming software update will introduce two primary functions: a diagnostic hearing test and an amplification feature tailored to individual audio deficits. Both tools will integrate directly into compatible Galaxy hardware.
FDA Clearance and Launch Timeline for Galaxy Buds 3 Pro and Galaxy Buds 4 Pro
The regulatory approval covers specific hardware models within Samsung’s ecosystem. When the update rolls out in Q4 2026, it will arrive exclusively on Galaxy Buds 3 Pro and Galaxy Buds 4 Pro devices in the United States and select other approved markets.
Unlike previous software enhancements geared solely toward general media consumption or ambient sound transparency, this implementation requires formal oversight. By securing FDA clearance, Samsung places its hardware alongside established over-the-counter audio assistance devices meant to address verifiable auditory decline.
How the Five-Minute Hearing Test and Personalization Work
Users will be able to initiate a self-administered evaluation directly from the Galaxy Buds settings on a compatible Galaxy phone. The diagnostic process takes only five minutes and is said to offer medical-grade results.
Once completed, the evaluation categorizes auditory function for each ear, determining that the user’s hearing is normal or categorizing them as having one of four stages of hearing loss:
- Mild
- Moderate
- Severe
- Profound
Users can access their detailed results in the Samsung Health app.
Advanced Sound Amplification and Noise Elimination Features
The personalization engine translates the diagnostic profile into real-time acoustic adjustments. Based on those results, the Hearing Aid feature amplifies the sounds users have difficulty hearing — such as high frequencies, surrounding whispers and distant voices — personalized to each user’s hearing profile.
Beyond simple volume boosts, the hearing aid mode incorporates sophisticated digital signal processing typically found in premium hearing aids. The earbuds utilize noise elimination, as well as beamforming to focus on audio from in front of the wearer and suppress background noise.
The feature is similar to the one found in Apple’s AirPods Pro, providing an accessible alternative for consumers seeking over-the-counter support before pursuing traditional clinical interventions.
