The San Diego Padres defeated the Houston Astros 7-2 on Sunday to take a three-game series, a victory that keeps the team one game behind Arizona and Philadelphia in the National League Wild Card race.
Offensive Surge
San Diego utilized four home runs to secure the win, a performance manager Craig Stammen described as the “cherry on top.” Jackson Merrill opened the scoring for the Padres with a solo shot in the second inning, marking his second home run in as many nights. Merrill, who has scored a run in six consecutive games, is currently tied with CJ Abrams for the most home runs in the league since July 18.
Fernando Tatis Jr. extended the lead in the fourth inning with a 421-foot home run off Cristain Javier, giving San Diego a 4-2 advantage. Tatis described the moment as amazing, beautiful

Gavin Sheets added a solo home run in the seventh inning off reliever AJ Blubaugh, his first since June 30. Sheets has struggled since the start of July, hitting .155 with a .477 OPS while managing plantar fasciitis. Following Sheets’ blast, a pinch-hit home run by Hays further increased the lead.
Bullpen Dominance
The Padres’ pitching staff retired the final 22 Astros batters they faced on Sunday, allowing only two hits during that span. This stretch included 12 consecutive outs recorded by the bullpen. Kyle Hart pitched a perfect sixth inning, followed by six outs from Bradgley Rodriguez. Jeremiah Estrada, recently returning from the injured list, closed out the ninth inning.
Stammen noted that the team is pretty tough to beat
when the bullpen is given a lead. Tatis added that the team has all the confidence in the world
in the relief corps to take care of business.
The win brings the Padres’ record to 62-57. Since the All-Star break, the team has gone 14-9 and has won four of its last seven series.
