Stroud have officially paused contract extension negotiations until after the 2026 season. Stroud will play out his rookie deal and his recently exercised fifth-year option, delaying any financial commitment as both sides evaluate his trajectory moving forward.

Which means they’ll now wait until after the season ends to assess the situation. G.M. Nick Caserio recently said so. The idea that there won’t be a deal before Week 1 wasn’t etched in stone, but the handwriting was written on the wall in permanent marker.

While both sides made an initial attempt to complete a contract extension before the start of the season, both sides agreed to pause negotiations until after the season, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN. Stroud are pausing negotiations around a long-term contract until after the season. The source spoke on condition of anonymity because discussions are ongoing.
The Texans open their season against the Buffalo Bills on Sunday. Would the Texans sign Stroud to a deal based on his performances to date? Yes. Would Stroud accept it? No. Houston’s preferred range likely won’t get any lower based on 2026. A strong year from Stroud could push it much higher. Even after the coming season, there may be no reason for the Texans to rush it. Stroud remains under contract through 2027. They’d be negotiating against themselves, like the Dolphins did when they gave Tua Tagovailoa what turned out to be a disastrous the-market-is-the-market deal in 2024. Actually, the Texans could let it ride for two more years, with the franchise tag in their back pockets in the event Stroud suddenly reaches a higher level of performance.
If he was already there, the Texans wouldn’t hesitate to pay him. They did it after three seasons with cornerback Derek Stingley Jr. They did it after three seasons with linebacker Will Anderson. They would have done it with Stroud, too. But only at the number that properly reflects his spot in a range that now extends from $20 million per year to $64 million annually. The Texans remain committed to Stroud. They didn’t bench him at halftime of a disastrous divisional-round game against the Patriots, even though they arguably should have. They want him to become a player who forces the Texans to pay him big money. For now, Stroud has to go out and show that he deserves it.

Texans general manager Nick Caserio said at a news conference earlier this month that even though he and Stroud had productive talks,
negotiations would likely be pushed to next offseason if they couldn’t agree to a new deal before the season began. Stroud is guaranteed to remain in Houston through 2027, but if he has another season similar to his rookie year, it could speed up negotiations on his next deal.
TruMedia Ranks Stroud Sixth in Expected Points Added
This season has major implications for Stroud, who sees a long-term future in Houston as the Texans hope to get over the divisional-round playoff hump. Stroud had a promising rookie season in 2023 that earned him Offensive Rookie of the Year honors and a Pro Bowl selection. During that season, Stroud ranked sixth in expected points added per dropback, per TruMedia, and the Texans advanced to the playoffs for the first time since 2019. He passed for 4,108 yards and 23 touchdowns against five interceptions.
Since then, however, his production has dropped. The former Ohio State passer threw for the fewest yards in his career last season, finishing with 3,041 yards, 19 touchdowns and eight interceptions. He also missed three games with a concussion. And over the Texans’ two playoff games last season, Stroud threw only two touchdown passes against five interceptions and took six sacks.
AFC South Jaguars and Texans Matchup
Will the Texans outlast the Jaguars in the AFC South? Stroud is still searching for the form he showed as a rookie, which is part of the reason the Texans haven’t been in a rush to hand him a massive extension. He will now have a chance to play his way into a big payday, but based on what Stroud has shown the last two seasons, he should be viewed as a midrange QB2 until he proves otherwise.
