Joint Practice Observations: Texans defense causes Panthers problems

The Carolina Panthers found themselves under heavy fire on August 26, 2026, as the Houston Texans put on a dominant performance during their joint practice at the Carolina Panthers Practice Fields in Charlotte, North Carolina. For an offensive line already missing key pieces, the sheer speed and power of the opposing front seven turned an ordinary training session into a grueling physical trial ahead of their preseason finale Friday.

Danielle Hunter and Will Anderson Overwhelm Carolina’s Pass Protection

Throughout the day, the Texans’ pass rush proved to be phenomenal, making regular visits to the Panthers’ backfield. Edge rushers Danielle Hunter and Will Anderson consistently beat their blockers, registering multiple sacks of Bryce Young had quarterbacks not been off limits during the workout. The constant pressure forced Young into throwing a couple of interceptions, casting a harsh spotlight on the offensive trenches.

The struggles in protection immediately highlighted the monumental task facing tackles Rasheed Walker and Monroe Freeling as they prepare to step into the shoes of the injured Ikem Ekwonu and Taylor Moton to start the season. While Walker is a good pass protector as a three-year starter on the left for the pass-happy Packers, and first-rounder Freeling has played well for the bulk of camp despite switching from his natural left side to the right, Wednesday proved to be a sobering measuring stick.

After a day in which the offense struggled to get things going, it was easy to draw a line from the protection to the lack of sustained movement. Young still has confidence in his guys, but he knows it needs to be better across the board, which includes himself as he admitted he needed to be better after a back-foot interception when he was looking for Tetairoa McMillan.

Dave Canales and Bryce Young Embrace the Stings of Training Camp

Rather than panicking over a lopsided practice, Panthers head coach Dave Canales viewed the defensive onslaught as a necessary crucible for his young linemen. The team entered the session needing hard answers about depth and execution, and the Houston front office and defense delivered them in abundance.

“That’s exactly what we need to see,” Canales said. “Monroe needs it. Rasheed needs it. When we dropped back today, we did little beyond Bryce extending and getting a couple of plays going. The rush was phenomenal. And that’s exactly the information we need to be able to regroup.”

Quarterback Bryce Young admitted that it sucks in the moment, but also tried to share the push to put a positive spin on the rough performance by acknowledging that there is a lot of great tape to learn from and that they are only going to be better from a day like this. Young urged the kind of perspective to take it as one data point rather than an illustration of camp as a whole, noting that in training camp it is always about not being too high and not being too low.

“Again, I think there’s a lot of great tape for us to learn from out there,” Young said. “There’s a lot of lessons out there. I think we’re, we’re only going to be better from a day like this. You know, it’s going to sting, and it sucks in the moment. We’re all competitors. But, again, it’s training camp; it’s always about not being too high, not being too low. Great days we have in practice, you can’t overreact; bad days you can’t overreact. You have to be steady and, and just be willing to grow from everything.”

C.J. Stroud and the Texans Offense Capitalize Across the Field

While the defensive line tormented Carolina’s offense on one field, the Texans’ offense was having the same success on the second field. Stroud had two touchdowns on the day and played turnover-free football.

Guard Ed Ingram emphasized the unit’s mindset following the workout, noting that the Texans came to Charlotte to put on a dominant performance, and this was better than the joint practice with the Raiders last week where the Texans were also dominant. Head coach DeMeco Ryans — hoping to see this kind of progression after losing in the divisional round for the third consecutive year and working in the offseason to limit weaknesses while enhancing an offensive line that made strides in 2025 but remained mediocre — similarly praised the upfront execution. Stroud and Davis Mills had to operate, seeing the guys pass off stunts, hearing them, and seeing everyone be on the same page. Meanwhile, newly acquired wide receiver Kayshon Boutte made the trip to Charlotte for the joint practice, but he did no work on the field as he prepares to ramp up.
