U.S. employment is projected to grow by 3.1% to 3.5% over the coming decade, driven by surging healthcare and artificial intelligence infrastructure. However, automation and AI tools are simultaneously reshaping the workforce, threatening hundreds of thousands of routine clerical, administrative, and cashier positions with steep declines by 2034.
The labor market is undergoing a sharp structural sorting. While technological innovation creates high-demand technical and medical careers, routine desk jobs face pressure from automation and artificial intelligence according to recent Bureau of Labor Statistics projections. Overall employment across the United States is set to expand modestly over the decade, but the underlying shifts reveal a widening gap between expanding sectors and shrinking occupations.
The Healthcare Surge and Nurse Practitioner Lead
An aging population and rising rates of chronic health conditions are fueling a massive expansion in medical and social assistance roles. The healthcare sector alone is projected to grow by 9.5%, adding roughly 2.2 million new jobs as reported by the BLS.
Sitting at the very top of the fastest-growing occupations is the nurse practitioner role, boasting a projected growth rate of 41% and a median annual wage of $132,300 based on federal labor data.

Artificial Intelligence Expansion and Energy Infrastructure
Beyond medicine, the demand for advanced analytics and artificial intelligence systems is spawning nearly 927,000 new professional, scientific, and technical service jobs according to labor market releases. Data scientists are projected to grow by 35%, computer and information research scientists by 22%, and information security analysts by 21%.

At the same time, the massive power demands required to run AI data centers are driving a quiet boom in clean energy trades. Solar photovoltaic installers are expected to surge by 37%, while wind turbine service technicians face a 30% growth rate due to expanding utility infrastructure.
Clerical and Administrative Automation Casualties
While technical and medical fields expand, routine office and administrative roles face steep structural declines. Automation and AI tools are projected to eliminate roughly 752,000 clerical positions including secretaries, customer service agents, and office clerks.

Cashiers face the largest projected absolute job loss of any occupation in the United States, with an estimated 313,600 positions expected to disappear by 2034 as retailers rapidly scale self-checkout lanes and cashierless store technology. Meanwhile, word processors and typists face a 36% decline, marking the fastest-shrinking occupation in percentage terms on the entire BLS list as large language models absorb core writing and transcription tasks.
Evaluating AI Exposure Across the Workforce
The projected decline of certain occupations does not mean they will vanish overnight, though workers in some fields may face fewer opportunities and increased competition over the next 15 years.
